My father had recently gone blind and one of his favorite hobbies was playing video games. So my question is to those who have some vision how did you continue playing video games?

I can't answer your question directly but I'm in the process of designing and creating a purely-audio game. I posted a separate thread if you (or anyone else) would like to leave feedback, it would be greatly appreciated.

I prefer playing open world titles. I mostly play GTA, but not anything else. Anything else is way too difficult for me. But then again, I’ve never been much of a gamer.

I mostly only play mobile games now on my iPad because I can use the zoom feature and hold the iPad close to my face. There are some games I used to play before becoming legally blind I had to give up because I got too frustrated with, that even zoom/magnification didn’t help. The contrast or text was just too light or small. I can watch tv if I sit very close although I still miss some things shown on the screen. I’d try sitting him directly in front of a large tv and adjusting as needed, though unfortunately some games may end up being hard for him to play.

Hi there, I went totally blind six years ago. And I used to enjoy playing video games before that happened. I was into see her severe depression for a long time. In the last two years the accessibility in video games has improved significantly! For me things that are beneficial or menu narration, and also a way for me to navigate my character through the different objectives. depending on the types of games that your father is interested in don’t just throw any generic game at them and say this is for you. Let him explore and tell you what he likes or wants to play. Remember to make the experience about him and his enjoyment of the games. My gaming set up consists of the following, I have an Xbox series S Consol That is connected to a 24 inch computer monitor I have an iPad and at the monitor On the iPad I use an app like Supersense, or seeing AI to read any text to help me get to the game. This has been very beneficial in getting through the EUL A’s on most games. I have also taken advantage of the Xbox iOS app. From there I can stream my games to either my iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth headphones connected. This has been beneficial for hearing where different characters are at on the screen in your game. Also I do not have to be sitting directly in front of the computer monitor when I’m playing like this.
Be sure to check audio games.net The forums there are full of helpful people that can help you with mini video games. There are also people that post the layout for the game menus to help you find what option you are looking for.
Bottom line even though he is blind he can still enjoy video games, things are getting better almost every day in the video game accessibility! This is by no means a definitive way for a person without sight to play games. Look around and see what other people are doing and modify things to your style of gaming! I hope this helps in someway Stay safe

I try to play games that have ease of accessibility settings like colour blind filters/text enlarge/being able to change resolutions. I tend to not play most fps games as I'm not able to see who is shooting me.
I am currently siting beside him, will take a look when I am home. Thank you

My daughter plays all the mario games on huge TVs. There are audio video games designed for the blind to use also
Edit-some of the more precise or quicker games she is not able for

To what degree has he lost his vision? What kinds of games does he enjoy?

He has a 60" TV and he can make out individual people but not much detail, but his vision is getting less and less by the year. He was really into the assassins creed games.

I’m the same way. I have to get up and lean very close to read any text on screen. When you’re blind and playing video games, there’s a lot of movement involved lol. I’d recommend trying to find games with lots of voice acting and stay away from games like Diablo which have hundreds of items with many many many text descriptions. There’s also the option of running emulators on a computer. That might be helpful since there’s more you can do in accessibility than on computers than TVs

I have a 45 in Tv and I sit about a foot and half away from it. I play things like Friday the 13th (it doesn't require to much precision or vision, no small texts. Either press R2 to swing weapon or X to interact are basics). Gang Beasts or JackBox are party game he could play.
