Is there a addon or something to make the text bigger on Reddit? (self.Blind)
submitted by casserole_cat
Like because it’s annoying that the max size is called watermelon and it’s still so small. And using zoom on this app can also be annoying. I would like to just go into this app and have all the text bigger. Like maybe it connects to my phone settings or something? Does anyone know anything like that because I’ve searched and searched around.

Edit:I’m legally blind

I used the accessibility features on my phone and I think that helped a bit. For me colour contrast is a big thing so I also turned reddit on light mode and that helped too. Before then I could hardly read here. I still don't spend much time reading long posts on here because my eyes would get strained after a short while. You could also try a screen reader. I know it can be annoying especially with having some vision, but if it's the only option it might help.

Thank you and yea my eyes do get strained and start seeing double and weird blind spots in my left eye after not too long. I don’t think I’m ready to be a screen reader I’m gonna try to figure this out I think.

That's fair enough. Check your accessibility settings on whatever device you prefer to use reddit on. My phone has a magnifier option and there's certain gestures to turn it on and off.

I second the first comment, since I am totally blind I rely on a screen reader, both on my phone and computer.

I wish you the best of luck.

Ok say I did use a screen reader could I use both my sight and the screen reader but just for certain apps then turn it off? I don’t know if this is what I want. Like sorta how people use captions but also can still hear some of what the characters are saying just can’t make it all out completely. Or is that not ideal?
seismologist2367 2 points 2y ago
Of course. It’s possible to toggle the screen reader on and off as you need it. On windows if you use NVDA just use incert+s to togle speech mode on and off. Hope it helps. ☺️

Thanks because maybe not yet but in the future I will slowly start to transition to screen reader or at-least learn how to use it before I really really need it.

Any time. If you have any other questions, I’ll help where I can. Pm is also open. Glad I could help.

My phone has a function that lets me triple zoom in on anything on my screen, really useful!
HorkinGreeners 2 points 2y ago
All my Androids have triple tap zoom turned on. Couldn't live without it.

I just have my browser magnification up, but then if I need to go to the chat and then close the chat, I have to lower my resolution to even get to the x button to close it...

So many websites have been FAR worse in accessibility the last few years instead of better. On some sites a lot of functionality is not even there if magnification in the browser is even 100% or 125%. I think it's partly because of all of the mobile devices... they assume you are on a mobile device if you have the text zoom setting high.

If you have an android phone, try using select to speak. It's an accessibility feature that sits in the bottom right of the screen. Tap it once to activate it then tap on the text you want it to read. If will read only what you select and is very good.

Let me know if yuu have any issues.

I have a iPhone and unfortunately text to speak doesn’t understand me most of the time unless I really try and speak very clearly and slowly. Because I have a speech impediment which isn’t too bad now but still my phone can’t understand me. I’ve taken 7 years of speech therapy though so this is as good as my speech gets.
poochbrah 2 points 2y ago
I think you have me confused text to speech reads to you what's on the screen. I think you're referring to speech to text which is something else.

Anyway you're right iPhone won't have that gesture but they've got something similar called speak screen and speak selection but I'm not sure how useful those will be considering your other comments. Worth being aware they exist regardless though.

All the best mate

Oh sorry I read it as “speak to text” which i know some people use. But thank you for commenting.

I agree, the app isn't the most accessible straight out of the box. I'm low vision but reading is one thing that really makes me suffer with eye strain. I also understand not wanting to use a screen reader, I'm exactly the same. Best solution for me is to use my laptop for extended browsing, as I've got it hooked up to a 32 inch TV, that plus a few ease of access setting changes is working well so far. I think it's a case of playing around with different things until you find a solution that works for you.

Apollo for Reddit has a setting to use the system text size that when combined with iOS accessibility is very large

Screenshot from iPhone 11. This is the maximum but it’s adjustable

Oh my goodness thank you so much I would give you a reward if I had some money! Or like hug you if we were in person. I’m gonna have to learn to use this app now but it’s gonna be worth it I can tell. So thank you again. It helps so much.

I do have windows 10 on my laptop but I just don’t really like doing Reddit on my laptop. And I think the app you are thinking of is for screen readers. But thank you for your comment I do use my laptop sometimes for Reddit but it just takes longer because I can’t look at the whole screen at once and also I’m not used to where everything is.
