Sporty/Experience-based Date Ideas for Blind Boyfriend?(self.Blind)
submitted by iwokeuplike
Hi, my boyfriend blind and I am looking for some ideas for dates that are adrenaline-filled, like experience based dates.
He is really sporty and loves waterskiing, and he used to love skiing. He has skydived and bungee jumped before.
He loves animals too; mostly interacting with them.
As of now, most of our dates involve dinners or taking the his service animal to a dog park. In the fall we did apple picking, berry picking and we went to a corn maze and had his service animal choose the directions to take.
I am out of ideas for the spring though.
Can you tell me some date ideas similar to waterskiing, or even like skydiving.
I was thinking indoor skydiving which is in a wind tunnel, or a trampoline park, roller coasters, but I would love any other ideas.
Thanks!

Indoor rock climbing is an option for a date night. Generally, a sighted guide gives verbal cues to the climber looking for different holds. It could be cool for something to literally do together (climbing alongside each other with you giving the cues or having a 3rd party be the guide giving the cues and you would just climb together). There is always running and biking (run yourselves to a coffee shop). I have some blind friends and we usually start with the activity and figure out how to adapt it. Feel free to PM for other thoughts or questions and have fun!

Thanks, rock climbing could be a great time! Your bike riding idea gave me the thought of a tandem bike as well!

GORUCK Basic event. Y’all might need to train together for it though depending on your current fitness level? The training alone could be great date material.
His pup would be welcomed also. I took mine to my last event in 2019.
It is team based so there are lots of folks there. If he communicates his needs or lack thereof folks are really good usually of just letting you go and embracing the experience. HMU if you have questions.

Hiking, zip lining, are things that I have enjoyed. There is also a cool activity I experienced, but I don't know what its called. I basically went up a tower by going accross crazy bridges; these were challenging and I was attached to a harness.

You have a lot of great ideas and seem like you'd be the leading authority on this haha. I can help brainstorm though, let me think...
they have those bars (depending on where you live) where you can throw axes at targets. Not as dangerous as it sounds.
Aquarium or zoos where you could handle live animals like rays, sharks, snakes, and bugs? Those are always a hoot, a different kind of adventure, and very tactile when often zoos are otherwise pretty sight-reliant. Some zoos also have like bird rooms where the parrots can land on you and eat food out of your hands.
Maybe a concert? Concerts are pretty adrenaline heavy, covid could be an issue though
Renting a canoe or kayak and exploring can be fun depending on the location. I really enjoy paddleboarding too but I'm not sure how accessible individual paddleboards are, but I have to imagine itd be easier than skiing
they have tubing (sledding) in some places while its still cold out, its similar to skiing but way more accessible (anyone can do it, like very little kids too). The trip down the hill is much shorter than skiing but much faster, and you can fit a lot more rides into a day without getting as tired
Rollercoasters are a good idea but you could also do like a state fair, they have so many things to do and often have lots of rides in addition to like food, music, drinks, watching animal contests and stuff. I know they have them in the summer or fall, not sure about spring

Thanks all of these ideas are really great, I am definitely going to propose these to my bf! I think paddleboarding would be fine as long as I give him audio cues as to the ways to paddle.

My husband is blind. Together we have done the indoor rock climbing, running, gym exercises, trail hiking, trampolining, as well as tandem bike riding and golf (he’s no worse than I am). He also played goal ball. We are thinking of doing an obstacle course together (Dirty Donkey Mud Run in our area), and he is taking our daughter zip lining this summer. Do you have any ropes courses in your area?

By rope courses, you mean the obstacle courses in the trees/off the ground? We have a lot and I wanted to try but I am worried about the safety and difficulty for my bf. How did your husband find them? Thanks for the great suggestions!

They’re still on his bucket list. The one near us closed before he could try it.

I have heard mixed reactions to indoor skydiving from blind people. Many blind people are dependent upon sound for balance so the indoor skydiving is just massively disorienting because it is so loud. Others loved it. YMMV. If he doesn't like loud environments then probably pass on indoor skydiving.
Horseback riding? It sounds like you'd both prefer something more interesting than just a paddock ride so perhaps a trail ride?

I was wondering how he might feel in a walled in tube (the indoor skydiving area) without ways to orient oneself, I am glad to have some feedback. Horseback riding on a trail could be fun, thanks!
