Writing and/or reading assistence (self.Blind)
submitted by Mssassypants76
Hello,
I hope I'm posting this question in the right group, if I'm not please direct me to the right sub.

I'm part of an online role playing writing group. One of our main writers was just diagnosed with RP. This has been an an emotional time for all of us as this person has become a close friend in real life. Through the last year with everyone enduring the pandemic, writing and our group became an emotional support system. It was our escape and our way to keep having fun.

We all would love to be able to continue. We want to be able to find resources which will allow our friend to continue writing. We're seeking voice to write, text to speech, and other options which would read our writings to our friend if available. We use Twitter as our platform and our friend uses an iPad to write

If anyone can direct me to apps or software this would be a great assistance to all of us. Thank you for your help.

There is VoiceOver built into iPads and iPhones that can read text to him. Android systems have Talkback.

If he currently getting any rehabilitation training? That training can teach him the technology and how to use it.

Thank you so much for the information. As the diagnosis was recent time is still needed, but I'll be sure to ask as I wasn't aware this was an option.

These guys might be able to provide the rehabilitation training your friend needs. If not, they might be able to direct you to a better source.

Can your friend touch type? If not, it's time to learn. That will be the most efficient way to continue writing - either connect an external keyboard or get a keyboard cover for said iPad. It will be more accurate and faster than speech to text software.

As for software, the iPad will have VoiceOver on it already and your friend can use that to read the text/screen and help navigate.

Is your friend receiving any services/training from their local office for the blind/vocational rehab? If not, they should look into that now so they can get ahead of the game on learning these skills. What services he qualifies for at this point may vary based on where you are, but some places will go ahead and provide training in advance if it's a given that you're going to lose a significant amount of your vision.
