do visually impaired individuals do role playing games?

I seen a large amount of individuals in various RP subreddits, so was wondering and thought it best to ask the community.

Just plain curious!
Malroax 17 points 2y ago
No, all we do is tune musical instruments and make baskets.
xD

Of course the blind community of people who are visually impaired, we of course interact with other communities.

I host and play DnD and will be going to to my first LARP event this summer (maybe not if COVID).

But it's a fair question, I hope this helps :)
NovemberGoat 2 points 2y ago
What kind of larping event is it? I've been quite fascinated by that world for a while, but haven't really investigated it that much because of the potential logistical nightmare it could be. What adaptations/hacks have I not thought of?
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I am sure visually impaired individuals do much more than tune musical instruments or make baskets. A few that I know of, or rather heard about , are atheletes and even cracked top exams . so the sky is the limit!

I got many responses from users and most of them have been of the opinion that the visually impaired community is active participants in whatever ways possible. feels good to hear about them and I wish them good luck.
golgaltha 6 points 2y ago
I figure blind community is like every other.

gym rat halperts, music slinging singers, writer types, and dice roll players.

Kinda hard to stereotype a whole group of people.. any group really.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yes, no stereotyping. But it is in the genes of us humans to stereotype. But the responses do point out that visually impaired individuals do RP.

My wife is blind and we've been playing D&D (and other RPGs) together for about 30 years. We go to conventions and she regularly wins table awards for roleplaying (informal votes at the end of a session to win a little prize). She doesn't really engage in the online community other than the games we play through Discord. Most games don't really require a lot of adaptation other than describing to the blind player what the layout of the scene is if you play with minis.

There was a podcast called "Going In Blind" which was a blind DM running a D&D game. He mostly explained D&D, though, he didn't really delve into what it was like being blind and playing D&D. Because.. well, it's like being anybody else playing D&D, really.

Yes, your comments have been helpful. I get to understand that many visually impaired individuals do Dn D RP. I have never played DnD before, so it is hard for me to understand. But thanks anyways.
FaerilyRowanwind 3 points 2y ago
There are dice and everything
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 2y ago
most of them are into dungeons and Dragons!
JackCyborg 2 points 2y ago
I am visually impaired and RP. A person with no sight can definitely RP. If you mean table-top, theater of the mind is the way to go, no sight needed. There are definitely braille dice, tactile maps, dice rolling apps. Bottom line, table-top RP is definitely accessible.

As far as LARPing, it is a matter of getting creative with the experience. I personally don't LARP (mainly because never had the opportunity) but can think of a ton of ways to make this accessible. The most simple answer is if you are all pretending anyway, just pretend the person walking around with a cane is not blind and RP as normal. Or, weave their blindness into the expereince. Getting creative and thinking either real simplistic or real outside the box is the name of the game here.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yes, I get to understand that RP is all about being creative. And people do seem to have fun and many experience with RP. Beyond DnD , there are other games also which VIP can enjoy. Thanks for the input!
zersiax 2 points 2y ago
Lol here's a fun fact: I am lead coder for a MUD where RP is pretty important, Starmourn, so I guess that would make the answer a proper yes :)
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I guess people with your experience are few, but none the less, still present . Makes me wonder, how many visually individuals are on Reddit, then how many of them are in this Sub and how many of them has read this post and bothered to reply! Still the inputs have been an eye opener for me. ;)
MizzerC 2 points 2y ago
Played before my vision issues developed, will continue to play even if my vision goes dark completely.

Textual, paper and die, live-action.

Not one of those has any reason to deny me accessability.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago

Wahaa! That’s the spirit man , and way to go! I am interested in what kind of live action RP you are into. Any bits of info would be helpful.
MizzerC 1 points 2y ago
What LARPing I have done? Don't think I've done anything since vision change, most probably from before my vision got terrible. Small community, pandemic, LARP'ing not being that popular, etc.

But as for all the live-action things I have done that involved roleplay at some point during? Cosplays, Vampire: The Masquerade, Boffer/Amtgard/etc versions that included RP, acting, etc.
ShoshanaLi 2 points 2y ago
Definitely! I’ve been playing D&D for years. My friends and I actually play online, so we barely need to make any adjustments at all for my vision.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
yes, most play DnD and seems interesting game.
modulus 2 points 2y ago
Yes, some of us do.
PlusNeighborhood7190 1 points 2y ago
I've been roleplaying since I was eleven.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
wow! That's just great... what games did you play?
codeplaysleep 1 points 2y ago
I've been playing (and occasionally DMing) role playing games for 25 years.
mdizak 1 points 2y ago
heh, is it just me, or did anyone else think of something totally different than D&D in regards to role playing?
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
dnD must be on the top spot. wonder which game occupies the 2nd spot?
tangela19 1 points 2y ago
Just pointing out that so many people play d and d because it is the most popular rpg system, not necessarily the most accessible. Because most *people* asked this question will also answer d and d, most *blind* people, as a smaller but representative subset, will have the same answer. There is a discord server called knights of the braille where people host, discuss, and play a range of systems, including but certainly far from limited to, d and d.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yes, I also thought of the same. Why does every visually impaired individual associate themselves with DnD RP, and the most evident are from the comments to my post. Your reference to the other RPG Servers has also been enlightening, and would like to explore the various RP's which interest VIP.

There is this VIP Youtuber who plays PS 4 /XBOX and explains how he does it. Mind boggling. When sighted individuals have difficulty in playing PS4 / XBOX games, imagine this dude doing all the crazy stuffs! hats off...
tangela19 1 points 2y ago
As I said, the reason most blind people Play D & D is because most people who play table top play DND. Blind people are just a representative subsection.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yes, DnD is one of the many RPG that visually impaired individuals indulge in. What about you? Do you indulge in some RPG?
BlackKingBarTender 1 points 2y ago
There’s a group of individuals with vision loss that play DND over Roll20.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
practice makes an individual perfect.
rmorabia 1 points 2y ago
The best thing I read on this topic is this RPG StackExchange Q&A by a visually impaired user: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/86707/can-i-begin-roleplaying-if-im-visually-impaired
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Well, visually impaired individuals have also made their mark in the areas where sighted people consider it to be their domain. Where there is a will, there is a way.
AutisticPearl 1 points 2y ago
I rp. I do text based though.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago

hello!

I am curious as to what kind of RP you are into. Preferably not DnD, since I have no clues about it. text is just fine with me. want to check it out?
AutisticPearl 1 points 2y ago
Ok
DrHugh 1 points 2y ago
I once was one of two players for a Star Trek RPG at GenCon last century, the other fellow was blind. He was instrumental in resolving the crisis we faced in the game. The game master didn’t have brain character sheets, of course, but it was mostly problem solving rather than rolling dice, and we had a great time.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
so it shows that visually impaired individuals do f fare well , if guided properly. This is amazing indeed.
DrHugh 1 points 2y ago
It wasn't a question of guidance; there were sometimes where a dice roll was required, but we could read out the values. For most of the game, it was a matter of reacting to events described by the GM, and planning on what to do next.

In short, it wasn't significantly different from any other RPG experience.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I totally agree with you. And by guidance I meant explaining to the players as to what needs to be done.
thatawkwardcosplayer 1 points 2y ago
Ooh!! I do a lot of rp!! I have both discord servers, CHERP and mxrp.chat!! ^_^ Those are my top 3 favs. (Last two are adult only tho!)

thatawkwardcosplayer 1 points 2y ago
