Can you read word tattoos with screen reader?(self.Blind)
submitted by absentmindedbanana
Hey everyone! I have a follower on instagram who is blind and uses some type of screen reader to see my instagram posts. She recently liked a picture of my new word tattoo. Was she actually able to read the words on my chest or was she only able to see my caption? Sorry if this is asked a lot, it was on my mind and i’ve already bugged her with a few questions. Thanks!

Probably read it through the caption but there are tools for doing auto OCR on images which could have been the source or they could have used a cell phone app like Microsoft Seeing AI. There are many options for the determined!

She posted a meme image with words so I imagine she can read images ? Very cool

I wouldn't assume that. There are lots of ways to create memes automatically or someone else could have done it.

Unless the letters were extremely clear I don't think a fully blind person would have been able to get them from the image with OCR tools, but that process is pretty hit and miss. So, screenreaders no, but some other tool, maybe.

She could have a form of blindness like retinitis pigmentosa or glaucoma where you still have a small field of usable vision.

OCR gets better and better. Depends on your tattoo really. If the script isn't too fancy and clear enough, OCR could absolutely do it and as mentioned some screenreaders offer built in OCR. Envision AI is even pretty impressive with hand writing, so I don't necessarily see a problem with a tatto. But yeah, to be sure what it was in this case you would need to ask her.
