Mother's Day Gift Ideas for Visually Impaired Wife?(self.Blind)
submitted by PBaz1337
I'm looking for a gift for my wife for Mother's Day, to either buy or make. She has limited vision. We have a one year old son, and this is her second Mother's Day as a mom. I'm wracking my brain for a something I can do that I could get my son involved in, but is practical and useful to her as a legally blind person. Personalized gifts from places like Shutterfly, etc. are nice, but kind of pointless if you can't see the pictures.
I'm a recording and mix engineer so I can definitely do something using sound, but I'm drawing a blank for ideas. I'd record my son but he hasn't started talking yet and hasn't quite figured out how microphones work, not for lack of effort on my end.
Any thoughts from the blind community? What kind of gift would you appreciate if it was you?
Thanks in advance!

Since your son is so little, you can get a baby impression kit from the craft store. It's some clay you can use to keep a mold of his handprint.
Really little kids can also help you cook by "making" guacamole. Scoop the avacado into a jumbo ziplock bag and let him mash it. Then he can give her a breakfast in bed of avacado toast.

I like those ideas. We tried to do an impression when he was first born but we couldn't get him to hold his hand out, so it just ended up being a mess that happened to have fingerprints. Maybe he'll hold still for round two. Thanks for the recommendations!

Hi. Is your wife a Braille reader? My best friend surprised me with a Braille Christmas card last year, and it meant so much to recieve a card that I could read. She also might like an audio greeting card that you guys can record a message with. Even if it is just baby babble sounds that your son makes, I think that she will still like it.

So...speaking of recording and sound, this one family I know made me several "Birthday Card tapes" that were a mix of them singing songs and telling jokes and sharing family memories. Think I even have one saved to my ITunes folder, so I would say something like that with your son playing with his toys and say he is helping you.

this might take a little longer than for mothers day but since you work with sound it was the idea that popped in my head.
there are these baby/child's first books and you could make something similar recording your sons laugh, saying mum and dad, maybe their first joke (children jokes are notoriously weird) stuff like that and save those to a folder or something more imaginative.
down the road she's going to have a collection that will do nothing but make her smile....
