Is it easy to qualify for disability if you’re legally blind (self.Blind)
submitted by mthklf
Hello
I have glaucoma and lost a significant amount of my peripheral vision. DBS works with me as well as a specialist for my eyes. I live in Florida, I’m 20 years old and recently had to stop working due to the danger I was causing to myself and coworkers. I submitted my application in hopes to get help but I wanted to ask others experience with this process. I have about 3 years of work behind my belt but the whole thing is a tad confusing. I’m married too if that impacts anything. I just really need the financial help as the bills are stacking up and I can’t work currently with my situation

Hi there. Legally blind falls under the Blue Book list of disabling conditions. In my experience, if Social Security agrees that you are legally blind, and you fall below the asset and income thresholds, then you should receive some some amount of SSI or SSDI (which may be reduced depending on earned income amounts)

Fellow blindy here! With your age and work history, you should qualify for at least some SSDI. SSDI is preferable because it doesn't have the stringent income and asset limits like SSI, which even consider your spouse's income.

I became legally blind 2 yrs ago. I get SSDI and didn’t have any issues getting it. I do not qualify for the supplemental (SSI) due to my husband’s income. As long as you meet their threshold for blindness and have the medical diagnosis to back it up you should be fine. If your approval is delayed you will get back pay. I didn’t because I got approved quickly but I did have to wait a few months to get my first payment because you have to be disabled for at least 6 months first.

Hi. I don't know you but I was born legally blind. I was wondering how you applied? I am looking into it

I just applied online at www.ssa.gov

Make sure you have any and all doctor information that can back up your claim.

To qualify for SSDI you need I believe 10 years of work. To get SSI you need to qualify finacially and you have to apply in person because of the type of disability you have. Look up the SSI requirements because I think you have the easiest chance of qualifying for it and not SSDI. I do worry that you being married might mess it up for you, but I wish you luck. The other choice you have is to get special training to work while blind. Contact your local agency for the blind. They will be able to help you.

The SSDI work requirements vary with age. Since she/he’s 20, the full amount of work credits is not required afaik
