Can I be a corrections officer or courtroom balilif with low vision? (self.Blind)
submitted by Liberty_Hawk22077
This is for the state of Ohio, I've always wanted to be in law enforcement. I was born 4 months premature and my retina in my left eye detached. I wear glasses which make my vision 20/40 to 20/20 in my right eye and 20/200 - 20/400 in my left eye. Are there any jobs in law enforcement that would accept me?

I worked in public safety management and am somewhat familiar with corrections. I would not recommend working in a correctional facility considering the impairment in your left eye. Jails are dangerous places and your vision places you, other officers, and inmates in danger. It would put you at a huge tactical disadvantage and inmates are sure to zero in on and exploit weaknesses. Maybe you could instead work in the community side of corrections as a counselor or pre-trial services.

I understand but I'd at least like to give it a go you know. Do you know anything about maybe courtroom security balilifs?

I’m not sure of everywhere, but here in KY most are sworn LEOs and work for the Sheriff’s Office. I’m sure it varies in other places, so you might want to check specifically in your jurisdiction. Have you considered becoming a public safety telecommunicator? Might scratch some the itch to serve the community.

I've never heard of that before sounds interesting

Not too sure how it works in the states but could other jobs lead you to that role somehow? So could you become a volunteer police officer, campus police, or security officer with a respected company. Would having experience in those roles help with a back door into your chosen careers? As in if the hr manager was wary of your VI at an interview, you would have proof you are capable.

I'm already a security guard at a steel plant just doing that as a stepping stone.

You might not be able to do hard core law enforcement, but sure could be a supportive role or specialist.

I too would like to do some kind of LE, but you have better vision than me. So go get em bro!

Imagine being disabled and still wanting to work for law enforcement that kills huge numbers of disabled people every year. Yikes.

Wow you're a big help...

I mean, you’re gonna have to face the fact that LE has a pretty poor track record when it comes to disabled people. In my own experience, I had a cop forcibly try to take my white cane away from me. It was unprovoked and I spent a night in jail for fighting back. They tried to charge me with assaulting an officer and one of the cops there testified in court that he would have been justified shooting me because I was carrying a weapon (the “weapon” being my white cane).

Not that I’m rooting against you, I think more disabled people working in law enforcement would be an improvement. I hope you can find a position, but just brace yourself, cops aren’t always very kind to blind folks.

I'm sorry to hear that, I'm not completely blind thankfully still got 1 good eye left with glasses 🤓 left eye is shit tho.

Yeah, my right eye is my totally blind one. My left is getting worse lately and it scares the fuck out of me.
