Hi I just dropped my favorite piece of jewelry and can’t find it(self.Blind)
submitted by casserole_cat
So now I’m crying. I can’t find it. I can’t find any jewelry when I drop it on my carpet but this one I love. It’s a pendulum and it’s so cool. And it was gift that I only got like 4 days ago. I’m debating if I should use be my eyes or not since everyone in my house is sleeping and I know I won’t sleep until I find it.
I know I probably sound dramatic but it’s just so frustrating and I hardly have any good jewelry or any at all. I keep losing it all or misplacing it.
Update: I just now found it! In the strangest way I dropped a earring when I was standing in the same spot. And went down searching in the same area and I found the pendulum. Literally in a freaking shoe that I must’ve checked 20 times last time. Like there’s no way it was there before because it rolled out of the shoe so easily like it wasn’t stuck in there or anything. Now I can’t find the earring though......

Use Be My Eyes. That’s what the volunteers are there for. It won’t hurt anything. Good luck I hope you find it!

I just got nervous and hung up before it even found me someone. I keep telling myself that since I’m legally blind and still have so much vision that it’s not for me. But I still can’t find it and all it did was fall on the carpet down below maybe bounced but it’s either it disappeared out of existence or I just can’t see it.

As a sighted person, just wanna say, nobody is judging you. If you need help, get it. I am short sighted and end up using my phone camera a lot to help me find my glasses.
changeneverhappens3 points2y ago
Oh man- the morning struggle, especially if they fell off the night stand or behind the bed.
xmachinaxxx15 points2y ago
I’m also legally blind and have struggled with the question whether I’m blind “enough” for help or for a cane, etc. Don’t fall in that trap though. If you need assistance get it.
FrankenGretchen7 points2y ago
Nope. If you can't see a Thing you wanna see, you're not gonna be shamed for asking for help. Be My Eyes is awesome. People genuinely want to help and are lined up to take a call. They're adventurous folks, too. ❤️❤️
There are times when I can help someone and times when I need help. I'm sure you've been on both sides. Be My Eyes is just the place where those two sides meet.

Be my eyes is awesome as a volunteer, it is so fun to help, especially with something rare

If you put pantyhose over the end of the vacuum hose and secure it you can safely vacuum up most small things. It’ll be in the pantyhose
Here’s a video/photos: https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/8392520/genius-hack-vacuum-tights-earrings/
Good luck!

I have used this hack so many times!

Use the app. Many people sign up to help others and end up disappointed they never get a chance. Literally never get asked.
scorchyrushmore3 points2y ago
This.
Ksizzle1512 points2y ago
Please use the app! I’ve been waiting for over a year to actually take a call. I’ve only had a handful of calls and someone always answers them first!

Here's what I do, and I have some sight: I get a strong flashlight and turn it on and lay it on the floor. Get down on the floor, your cheek to the floor, and start looking. A flashlight will cast shadows and you might be able to see the piece of jewelry this way. I have a very strong 2000 lumens LED flashlight that I use.
If this doesn't work, everyone else is right-- download and use the Be My Eyes app. People on the other end are waiting to help, and all you have to do is turn on you camera on your phone, and slowly pan the room, as they look for the missing piece of jewelry. It's pretty amazing that this app exists, and that there are people waiting to help us out with things us blind folks struggle with.

I also use that method of putting my cheek to the floor to find things. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I have RP so I have a very small visual field and looking down at the floor I can only see a tiny spot on the floor at a time. If I look from the side with my cheek to the floor though, I can see from one end of the room to the other in a straight line so I can cover a lot more ground that way. My family looks at me like I'm crazy when I do this though haha.

Use Be My Eyes, and tomorrow or the next day, practise finding dropped objects like dropping or having someone else drop small objects like coins.
wheatmontana5 points2y ago
have you found it?
casserole_cat [OP]3 points2y ago
No I eventually went to bed but I’m gonna try again today. I that entire side of the room though I’m really confused on how I even didn’t find it because it’s not a small thing. Yes it looks like a peachy colored clear quartz so it would be harder to find but it also has a metal top and it’s about a inch long.
Pickleweede4 points2y ago
I have enough sight in one eye to see about 3 meters clearly. I still use the app for everything like finding earrings I dropped. Identifying coins. Reading labels at 3am. Do it!! Don’t be ashamed! It’s all cool OP!

So I just used the app and we searched but couldn’t find it. And oddly enough didn’t find any other jewelry and a lot has fallen from that exact spot (where my jewelry is kept and a mirror). And so Um I guess I’m just gonna hope it shows up. I mean I moved my bed and everything and questioned my dog lol. (My dog just looked confused). So yea I guess I’m gonna chop it up to one of those times when something really does disappear. If I can’t find it and a sighted person can’t find it and looking every where in a big area doesn’t find it then idk what will.
Ultimately the person sounded very eager and even asked his girlfriend what a pendulum was and I think she was also looking on the screen. So I liked the app and they didn’t seem to mind how messy my carpet is because I have a white dog that sheds like half a pound of fur a day (I’m exaggerating but still It’s a lot)

It will eventually turn up and probably in the weirdest of places. Please let us all know when it does.
nullatonce1 points2y ago
I'd use a magnet to scan the flor

Ask somebody for help, if you do have some of your vision still, it’s worth placing a flashlight against the floor as the ring will create a shadow which might be a lot easier to see
1BlindNinja3 points2y ago
Put a pair of tights, thin fabric over the end of your hoover pipe and put the extensgion on. Hoover the floor and it will hold it at the filter you have made. Easy peasy lemon squeezy 😊

Hi, Casserole Cat! Have you found the necklace? What happened?
casserole_cat [OP]2 points2y ago
I didn’t find it I truly lost it to the point of be my eyes couldn’t find it and neither could my dad. So I got a new one and it’s a different one and I think I liked my old one better. But that’s ok I’m over it and my old one will probably eventually turn up in the weirdest spot. My old one was also better at answering questions but maybe that’s something I just have to get mine used to or something. Any way thanks for asking!

So for Christmas my friends gave me something really useful. It's a remote control and little receivers, and I put the receivers on my phone and wallet and keys and then I click the remote control and it beeps at their location. That might not be the best method for finding your jewellery but it's an option.
Superfreq22 points2y ago
I would just take 20 minutes and really search from one edge of the room to the other with your hands combing through the carpet and using what vision you do have, if not in a grid pattern, than in lines. Do it twice.
You could also move in concentric overlapping circles/squares, outward from where it fell.
The more you do this the better and faster you will get. It's what most skill centers teach.
casserole_cat [OP]1 points2y ago
I have been very carefully searching in a pattern. My room is very small and I have lots of furniture in it and lots of stuff. So it can be hard to find things. I just really can’t find it and I’ve searched for like 3 hours collectively. I think it might just be one of those things that will turn up or i will find when i move one day.
Superfreq22 points2y ago
ah man, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear it.
casserole_cat [OP]1 points2y ago
It’s alright I don’t know what I’m gonna tell my friend and that one isn’t on Amazon. But I can always get a new one on Amazon for relatively cheap. Because I really enjoyed how pretty it was and then how you could ask it questions and have it say yes or no and It was usually correct.
I’m going to work on Saturday to make some money and I think i might buy a new one with some of the money it depends though because I make $10 a hour. And it’s just a counter installation so depending on how it goes it could be 2 hours or like 4 hours. Since I don’t know what type of material the client chosen and what their setup in their kitchen is like.
My dad is a contractor and I’m allowed to work with him on weekends(since he gets paid double on weekends and it’s extra work so his boss can’t complain if he wants to bring me because his boss has no one else that will work on weekends) Usually I’m just running back and forth from his work van to get him different things. And occasionally I get a small lesson if the client isn’t home (the client is usually hovering if they are home and don’t want some “little” girl messing their stuff up much less one that has a lazy eye and half closed eyes indicating that I may have bad vision.)
But I can get a good one for like $16 on Amazon and I can for sure make that on Saturday so i am looking forward to that and that construction eating life that comes with it Saturday (lots of seven elevens and drive throughs which my dad like never allows fast food unless we are working then he says we deserve it) so I’m not sad anymore Because i know Amazon has them.
Superfreq22 points2y ago
I'd be happy to buy you a new one if you send a link... That way you don't have to spend your limited funds on it. I set aside a certain amount each month for that kind of thing, so it's not like I would mind.
I appreciate your positive outlook by the way, it's pretty cool.
oldfogey123452 points2y ago
The ap has no downside to it. It's not like deciding to use a cane or a dog and the whole world treats you differently.
Those people don't know your visual acuity and won't care.
Besides, my crappy vision gets in the way of me finding stuff way more than being totally blind. When I lose something I ask my GF who is a total to find it for me. She finds it much more quickly than I do even if she is not in the room where I drop it.
