Alt text plus image descriptions for screenreaders (self.Blind)
submitted by Crater6
I've heard that a few major social media sites have adjusted how they handle alt text in the past year or so, but since I don't personally use a screenreader, I'm not sure what best practice is at this stage. For Facebook, I can edit alt text (and do, especially when posting an image with text, like a screencap from an informative Instagram post or a Tweet)—is it redundant to then add that same text back into the body of the post?

I also notice people comment on these sorts of image with text posts by putting the text in the comments, which seems possibly confusing, but maybe not. (Same for Twitter images—it still seems standard for people to add alt text but then also follow up with a separate, longer description for basic text images. For some reason, I thought the addition of editable alt text was so that the description text could be tied to the placement of the image and reduce redundancy.)

I'll be doing a lot more of this coming up, so I'd just like to try to be thorough! Appreciate any feedback.

If the picture is there. It should be described. The alt text is a substitution for being able to see the image. If you there is no description, it might as well not be there - objects without descriptions are just obstacles without definition. If your tulip field is named 134272.jpg and has no descriptors, its really just garbage to someone who can't visualize.

I agree, but thats why i mentioned leaving alt="" then image is skipped.

And i love it!

On the other hand, in this not perfect world people can start thinking it's accessibillity issue.

Atm I'm making a silly browser game and it goes like this:

Cost: 100 gold (gold icon)

and the gold icon has a blank alt to not get read out: Cost : 100 gold gold.

That's where I'm coming from.

Edit: i thot this was a reply to my post :)

Personally from accessibility point (SEO is different subject) for non important images i prefer alt left blank than NVDA skips the image.

Why i should care about image of tulip field? But then there's SEO and i understand why people use it.

instagram's alt description "for accessibility" is like licking honey through the glass, IMO it's stupid, but from the point of giving a reason to fill it it's done well

Alt text is sufficient for a screen reader. Some news sites will have a basic description followed by a caption that provides context to all readers. For example: "a field of tulips" followed by "tulip fields in Holland flourish as tourism is banned."
