Blind character in media (self.Blind)
submitted by lowercase-RCS
Hello, how do you feel about blind characters who can see with some type of power? Do you think it's rude or cool? How much should it be discussed or brought up or at all? What is some interaction or scene that should or shouldn't happen?

Thank you!

We probably get this kind of question every couple of weeks and there are lots of characters like that in fiction already, including Toph in Avatar, Geordi in Star Trek, Daredevil, and there are others.

I don't think anyone really cares that much about it from the perspective of it being rude, but I think if you do that, you're not really writing a blind character. If you give them magic powers or super advanced technology, which is basically the sci fi version of the same thing, they don't actually have to deal with it like people actually have to in reality. At that point you're not really putting your character through any stress so really what's the point. It's not really a blind character anymore.

If you're going to write a blind character, write her blind, and make her deal with it. Don't give her a way out.

As to the rest of it, absolutely the largest amount of time I spend thinking about being blind is when I'm writing on this reddit so really it doesn't come up very often...
