Offering Trasncription Services (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindGuyNW
Edit: Please free to email any documents you'd like transcribed to transcribeittoday@gmail.com. My friend will be happy to take a look at them.

Hi ALl,

A sighted friend is interested in offering her services to provide transcription for inaccessible documents. This is probably going to be a niche kind of thing, but she enjoys helping people and has done this for a few specialized things for me previously.

That being said, I was wondering if anyone here had ideas for the logistics of this? She isn't thinking of charging for the service at this date, it's just a volunteer thing, and obviously turn-around time would depend on the nature of the document. This would be for things like transcribing inaccessible PDF into Word format, that kind of thing.

Any thoughts on this question would be appreciated. I'm not sure how much interest there would be in this but figured I'd ask. She is bilingual in French, so if there is anything requiring either language it is a possibility.

I use an app called Voice Dream Scanner that will use OCR to convert documents to PDF and read them out. So far I've found that the accuracy is pretty good as long as the quality of the document you are taking pictures of is pretty clear. I print out an inaccessible PDF and then scan it in.

I'm currently in school and regularly get inaccessible documents in French. Does she charge etc?

This should be addressed by Disability Services. If they're not helping, complain.

I've been complaining but I've got a horrible SENO (Special Educational Needs Officer) who takes the literal piss. Granted I was only asking out of curiosity because I never know - might be useful. :)

HEy,

She isn't currently expecting any compensation, but might at some future date depending on how much interest there is. SHe's happy to help however she can.
