Hey I responded to your ask Reddit post. Speaking of ignorance

So this one time I am out with my friends at local bar Jack Astor's sure you've heard of them. I was pretty sure they had a Braille menu so I asked the waitress.

The server gave me a look so blank even I could see it and was like "Braille? Braille? Is that the menu with all the healthy alternatives and low calorie options?"

"No, that's the menu with all the little bumps on it."

Just could not believe someone my own age had no idea what Braille was. You would think that would have come up in their training.

Oh I've been asked if braille is what deaf people use to hear again 🥴

I love this.

oh yeah I get told I'm not blind all the time because I can go to the store and pick what Pepsi kind I would like from the color. seriously these people don't understand that if they had my eyesfor one day they'd be in the emergency room before noon.

Ahahaha I love this so much- sighted people assume we are missing braincells instead of eye functionality

I love this too.

This is easy for me. I went blind little over 4 years ago, and miss seeing beauty the most.

Just simple beauty. Whether that's a beautiful sunset, a mountain range, a cute guy with a nice butt, a deer protecting her young, or even a family of quails running around the yard.

Yeah, I miss seeing beauty.

People's facial expressions. You miss so much, I think.
Revenant624 3 points 2y ago
That’s definitely one of the things I miss that in video games

> a cute guy with a nice butt

Not... not where I thought it was going.

Online there was an interview with blind adults and one of the questions was "If you could choose one thing to see, what would it be?" And first came the normal stuff like loved ones, sunsets, etc. And then this one dude straight up goes "I have always yearned to know what titties look like" I swear I have never laughed at a youtube video hardee

Welcome to the disabled world!

But thank you for your effort to try to educate them. We appreciate it.
MostlyBlindGamer 6 points 2y ago
Yeah, that's pretty typical.

Thanks for educating yourself and other people.

Yeah, it’s kinda frustrating. I wish for a disability pride or accessibility movement to gain traction and awareness

Oh yeah, I definitely agree with what you’re saying. I just wish we could bring awareness to the oppression all people with disabilities face, but more so a shift to the social model of disability.

There’s so much ignorance about a lot of things which is terrifying with all the information and technology at our fingertips.

But many many people definitely do not understand that vision is not all or nothing, and that there’s varying degrees of blindness.

Yes, it's rather depressing. Though if/when you have the bandwidth for it, reddit does provide a good educational opportunity.

Even if only 1 out of 10 people seeing your responses to the stupid posts really takes it to heart and learns something, that's potentially the start of a chain reaction when they inform someone else who informs someone else ETC.

It can be exhausting though.
