How can I help? (self.Blind)
submitted by Karmalondike
I'm not saying this as a way that all blind people need help, but I'm curious how to help for those that might need it. Say, for instance, I have a blind friend. What can I do to make a house, or any activity, more blind friendly? Lmk if there's anything I can do to make it easier for other things as well.

My wife is visually impaired. The single biggest thing I can do to make her life easier is to keep the damn house clean. That's particularly challenging with a one year old, but it can be done. I know of other couples where the SO has sight and they don't keep things clean, and as you can imagine, the visually impaired person is constantly running into things, stepping on stuff and knocking things over.

Another thing I do a lot is verbally tell her where things are (wine glass is right next to your right hand, coffee mug is on the counter beside the sink, etc). It's taken a few years, but we have a pretty good system now.

Another trick we picked up from walking up and down the Vegas strip enough times is coming up with a signal for when something like stairs, escalators, etc are coming up. I give her hand a light squeeze when we're approaching those things, and we've gotten so good at it that we don't even have to slow down or say anything.

I think he keeps me out of his shed by failing to tidy up.

God that makes us sound like a suburban couple, shoot me.

Now that you mention it, the cables and instruments strewn across my studio space could be a subconscious "GTFO" signal.

Asking this question in a respectful way like you did already means you're on the right track. Keep doing that and those who need your help will be willing to tell you when they do.

well another poster on here had friends where they would only watch movies together and that wasn't fun.

if you like playing board games, normal cards and Uno cards with Braille are purchasable and we have had a lot of fun with that at group get togethers, that and trivia games, you just have a designated reader and game master if you will.
