Blind characters with powers (self.Blind)
submitted by lowercase-RCS
Hello, how do you feel about blind characters who can see with some type of power? Do you think it's rude or cool? How much should it be discussed or brought up or at all? What is some interaction or scene that should or shouldn't happen? (How do I make this more accessible ?)

Thank you!

This does come up quite often, I think this might be the second time in a week!

Short version is if they can see with some sort of power, like Geordi in Star Trek, or Toph in Avatar, or Daredevil, that person isn't really blind.

If you want to write a blind character, write a blind character. There's nothing wrong with what you're doing, it's a completely legitimate bit of sci fi or fantasy or whatever, but that's not really a blind person in the end.

I think if you want to write a blind character, write a blind character, and make them deal with it. You can do a lot with a character like that.

Ah jeez what is it with people...

Am I the only person that is slightly tired of Reading posts where people want to know how to write their blind characters in stories?

I don't mind if people ask, I'm a bit alarmed by the number of magic blind pixie requests we get!

If we got a serious novelist or screenwriter asking, someone who'd done their homework first and was asking specifics, I'd be a bit more sanguine about it.

writers are always looking to exploit. its not a nice word but there are thousands of topics out there that writers want to tackle. not only that but in my case a pitch i'm doing is looking for specifically under-represented and diverse voices. I was considering asking a similar question here for a pitch i'm doing but if the community isn't willing to work with writers then perhaps this isn't the best place to ask.

but why shouldn't we? what do people in this community want in terms of representation in popular media? what do people do wrong? what do they do right? does this community not want to be represented? working with writers is a better path than complaining about somebody's effort, but then if you feel exploited that should be part of the conversation as well.

you should work with writers to help to improve the way the voices of this community is heard otherwise your voices will be skewed into something that resembles a caricature.

Awww sorry about that I just don’t know any IRL blind people and don’t want to offend folk😅

Make your char blind but give him different powers that don’t help him with his sight. Make your char deal with it but give him cool powers anyway.

THATS A GREAT IDEA 💡

Do they NEED to be blind? Why? What’s your purpose for that character?
Thick_Wolverine1858 0 points 2y ago
It’s a Medusa type deal

what does turning people to stone have to do with blindness? and why are you answering like you're the OP
Thick_Wolverine1858 0 points 2y ago
???? It’s because she meets a person who is blind and isn’t turned to stone(sorry for the confusion I’m just not sure how many details I want to give) What’s the op?

Wait I just saw it says a different name??? I don’t. Iv never seen that name before. It only says that when I’m logged into my phone. weird

then I'm confused with what that's have to do with your original question? this isn't a blind person who can see with some sort a power, it's a power that don't work on them because they are blind.

on reddit OP mean "Original Poster" most of the time

I think it really depends how the character is used as a didabled person in the story. Are they a person beyond that characteristic? Or is their whoke personality and enotional turmoil just about blindness?
Someone who has always been blind but longs for vision to see their true love? Cliche and undermines the actual turmoil of being born blind.
Someone who went blind later in life fue to a trauma that is obly there for a sob story? Kind of annoying.
But you csn do it right!
Blind oeople who see through powers shouldnt only be about their sight or lack there of. Maybe its a strong female character who is proud of her disability, and after discovering this power of sight, she chooses to live her daily life without it because she doesnt feel like its a part of her.
Maybe its a young man who lost his sight due to a genetic issue as a teenager, maybe this power is all that he has ever wanted but once he gets it he loses sight of his identity as someone how has been disabled.
Or maybe its a person who has accepted their blindness, uses the power as needed but lives their life normally like any other character.

The blind character shouldnt be written to be blind. You need to have a purpose, personality and meaning for every character, if they have a disability or not doesnt always have to be the main event. Obviously youre allowed to incorporate it! But do it in an authentic way that isnt just a diversity drop.

Not sure but I’ve seen some great concepts.

The one that comes to mind was a character who had psychic abilities and could communicate telepathically with a creature that acted as her eyes. I thought that was awesome!

Or Toph from Avatar was also amazing.
