NVDA rant : why is it so slow (self.Blind)
submitted by Purple-Mallard
I love NVDA really but oh my God it annoys me sometimes.
I work in Microsoft Word pretty much all day and I must have lost half of my life in the time it takes NVDA to read the next lineafter I hit the down arrow key.

I don't understand why I need to wait half a second for it to actually do what I asked it to do

And this is when it's working well, sometimes it just completely locks up. I don't understand what's happening
NVDA being slow? I have a computer that's new this year so I don't think it's the computers fault

Is anyone else also having this problem?

Lol you think thats bad try jaws, its slower in word for me than NVDA is, though both were laggy.
I honestly think the issue might just be word though, as I've been away from windows yet still use word on mac but find it slower than pages is with voiceover.

Hi. I have had the same experience. If you are only working in Word, I would suggest trying out Narrator.
AndAdapt 1 points 2y ago
I agree. Narrator is good enough for the office suite. I use office on my apple silicon MacBook through windows and use narrator.

It's faster than nvda on my microsoft surface laptop.

Crazy thing is I only give four gig of memory to the virtual machine on my Mac

If you live in the U.S or Canada you could always go with the home annual JAWS license if you don't want to bother with GSuite or Libra Office and it's important that you have a fully featured editor.

Even before these lag issues some people are having, I never understood those people who claimed that NVDA was better in Office products. Clearly they just don't know of all the JAWS features available for it... And this is coming from someone who uses NVDA as a primary and generally likes it. NV-Access has always lagged surprisingly far behind even on the basic support.

Hey friend. Just cause your computer is new doesn’t mean it has all the specs needed to run NVDA efficiently. Have a gander. It might me you don’t have enough ram
ellvix 2 points 2y ago
How much RAM is it supposed to take? I checked Task Manager and NVDA is only taking 40 MB or so. That doesn't seem like a lot. Does it take more for others?
FaerilyRowanwind 2 points 2y ago
It’s about running that and other processes

So this is what it says it needs for minimum requirements

Memory: 256 MB or more of RAM.
Processor speed: 1.0 GHz or above.
About 90 MB of storage space.
ellvix 2 points 2y ago
Ah ok. So it doesn't matter as much how much NVDA actually takes, and more that I have 50 tabs open and my computer is crawling.
FaerilyRowanwind 2 points 2y ago
Yes. And nvda needs more “space” than you are allowing it to run. If that makes sense.

There is an NVDA add-on called Microsoft word extended, that will help with the accessibility of words were using NVDA as well, they are there are tutorials as to how to use word with NVDA that the NVDA access company who makes NVDA has put out so yes there are ways you can use NVDA.
Also, to the original poster try going into your speech settings with NVDA control V tamping down to where it says rate and raising the rate of your speech engine I do not know, which one you’re using but give that a try and let us know if that helps.

Unfortunately this seems to be an issue with some (but of course not all) people. Try enabling the option to use UIA in Microsoft Word in NVDA's advanced settings, see if that helps a little.
snow671 2 points 2y ago
Yes! Mine was fixed when I ran NVDA with add-ons disabled.
Purple-Mallard [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That doesn't seem to make a difference to mine sadly
Remy_C 1 points 2y ago
This is news to me. I find the same thing happens with JAWS. It gets super laggy after a while, though saving sometimes fixes that. I've never experienced this before with any of my' other computers or JAWS, nor NVDA. I hope some others have helped you. @
CosmicBunny97 1 points 2y ago
Could it be the processor or ram? I’m only learning NVDA so I don’t have any add ons, but it works fine on my end.

I've had similar issues. Now, my computer is by no means the fastest, but neither orca or VoiceOver will choke during use.

NVDA, on the other hand, does. Try having multiple apps running in the background, and performance will drop significantly.

Hey, can you mention which TTS are using? What is your computer configurations because it cannot be NVDA
