I have been type 1 diabetic since I was seven yeaes old. After years of uncontroled blood sugars I started having other health issues. About a year ago I went completely blind in my left eye. In November 2019 I had my first retinal eye surgery. In December 2019 my right eye started hemorrhaging. I had emergency surgery the following week. This past year has been difficult but I was showing improvement. Last week I was told my vision would not get any better and glasses wouldnt fix the problem. I feel devastated and heartbroken. I feel like everything I did was for nothing. My vison now is 20/100 in left and 20/70 in right. I am only 32yrs old. What are things that help you with everyday struggles . Programs ect that makes things a little easier.

I became legally blind two years ago due to diabetes. Long story short, I ended up in the hospital in a coma because of DKA. After I woke and recovered I noticed my glasses didn’t seem to be working well. I went to the eye doc because I thought I needed a new script. But no. After seeing a specialist I was told I was legally blind and could no longer drive and there was probably nothing they could do. It was devastating. I was almost 41 yrs old. I’ve had laser photocoagulation and Anti-VEGF injections. I still have hemorrhages. I still struggle to keep my sugar levels stable. My vision is currently 20/200 and 20/400.
You are not alone. One thing that helped me was getting an iPad and iPhone which was suggested to me by the O&M specialist. I was a staunch android person before but the accessibility options don’t compare imo. The option to zoom, enlarge text and use Siri really help me feel semi normal. And certain Apps like Be My Eyes, TapTapSee and SeeingAI are only available on iOS I think. I also use tactile sticker bumps ( I don’t know if that’s correct name). I use them on my appliances because I can’t read the buttons now. Sorry don’t want to go on too long but good luck to you.

Get involved with the vision rehab services. Join support groups. Magnifiers, canes, enlarged text and high contrast are things I used when I was low vision so hopefully they help you out too. Remember you’re allowed to grieve.

Absolutely this! Your ophthalmologist should be able to refer you to programs that will help you.

I am in a similar situation and I’ve had to learn to be grateful for what I have while not denying that it makes my life more difficult. What helped is learning about assistive technology so I’m not cut off from parts of society that I want to be involved in.

Magnifiers and my phone are my best friends! (my good eye is 20/60 - 20/80 depending on how tired it is).

Thank you all for the kind words and support. I have an appointment to speak with doctor about local agencies.
