Need advice (self.Blind)
submitted by mkdun
Hi all - I have a genetic condition that primarily impacts my eyesight and is degenerative. I’m 28 now and have had multiple corrective surgeries on my retinas, I have developing glaucoma in one eye and oncoming cataracts in both. I was warned from an early age that this all was to be expected, but more than ever I’m having real trouble grappling with the fact that it will only get worse from here. I work full time in front of a computer screen 8+ hours a day and can’t help but feel like I am wasting days, weeks when my health seems to be diminishing quicker than I thought it would. I don’t have any good answers, I need my job because I need health insurance but this has been the toughest stretch of time I’ve had in a long time. Just looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience here. I don’t have many people who can relate to this.

When you say wasting days, do you feel like you should quit temporarily to "live life" , travel, etc?

Not sure if I've misunderstood.

Could you do a bucket list of sorts, are there images you want to see or things you want to do?

For things to do, I don't personally believe your vision will stop you doing anything on a wishlist

If you need to work in front of a screen for your job, I'd highly recommend starting to learn to work with screen readers. NVDA is a good one to pick up given it's free, and doing so should at least make you able to perform some tasks entirely without sight from the get go, unlocking more and more of those as you get more proficient.
