Is there a wearable device specifically for seeing crosswalk signs? (self.Blind)
submitted by kelpangler
In general I think I’m pretty good with walking around town. I can see the sidewalk and general objects along the way. The biggest difficulty is crossing streets with traffic lights. I practice listening for traffic and observing which side is moving, but I wish I could somehow see when the crosswalk sign changes. Is there a wearable device like glasses that will help with this? I feel like being able to overcome this one thing would greatly improve life for me. I assume for others too.

where I am from most light crossings have "beepers" maybe it is possible to petition for them to be installed in your city? (might only work with larger cities) with so many looking at their phones too, it's not just for the visually impaired anymore

That’s a good idea to explore. Even though I live in the LA area, my town is pretty small with an “old town” feel to it. I’ll look into it.

Hope it goes well and out of curiosity how V.I.-friendly is LA? also have a nice weekend

It's not as bad as people make out but that's mainly because of uber. I don't live there so I don't learn routes very much.

Generally the USA is not as friendly as europe.

I’m probably not the right person to ask. I only lost my vision last year and I was mostly locked down because of the pandemic. But it’s obviously a big place and both the city and state have social services high on their priority lists.

I have a buddy who lives in Burbank which is really nice, it has a sort of small town vibe with the main street and everything. I may be the only person on the planet who likes LA!

Oh I like it here too. I’m in the next town over from Burbank. 🙋🏼‍♂️

Since monocular has already been suggested

I'll add Esight to the list

Since you have some vision maybe a monocular like this would help.

I appreciate the suggestion. This kills my heart though and I don’t want to be seen around town wearing this. I received a monocular from my vision aid assessment which I’m grateful for but I don’t want to just stand there looking through a telescope.

I wish there were wearable glasses that just did that one single thing. Tell me when I can cross. 😢

Even if it existed, it would be unsafe to use.

How so?

The glasses mentioned would be based on color detection, a technology that is still in its infancy.
