I don't like when sighted people tell motivational stories about the blind. (self.Blind)
submitted by blind_system
You've herd this before. He was blind, no-one thought he could do it, and than he actually did it, and I was shocked.

The point is, It bothers me. I'm not sure if its the cliche, or the way they're told. Its just frustrating to listen to, and I can barely stand them.

nah I get it, because they don't fully understand what it actually means to be Visually Impaired, it's basically just inspiration porn and not actually relatable
Criptedinyourcloset 13 points 2y ago
I agree. This is kind of unrelated but I saw this article on the Internet about for blind people who are scientists. Like, why is it so surprising there’s so many sighted people? At the beginning of the article it literally said “did you know blind people could write and read just like sighted people? “And I was like thinking to myself “yeah idiots we can this is 2020 how do you not know this. “Like, it was almost like the entire article was just this condescending rant meant to insult blind people. Which, it most likely wasn’t but

That's the thing - people are surprised when we do anything, because they don't expect us to be capable of anything. If they had reasonable expectations and a better understanding of what it's like to be visually impaired, they wouldn't be so shocked.

Agreed. It's honestly really sad to have people constantly doubt one's abilities just because they happen to be blind. I remember once overhearing my horseback riding instructor tell a beginner student, "if a blind girl can do it, anyone can!", not to mention the fact that it took at least 3-4 years of sporadic riding to get down the basics.
MostlyBlindGamer 5 points 2y ago
Wow, I'm sorry. I guess if that person can be a riding instructor, anyone can.

My default response is: "If you're impressed about that, you should see me at funerals. I kill."
Winnmark 2 points 2y ago
Oh that's good.
BlindRyan1 3 points 2y ago
I've had a lot of years to figure out good comebacks to people without perspectives. I do find it funny that sighted people lack perspective like that.
Winnmark 2 points 2y ago
Oh my goodness, these just keep getting better.

Bug me on my streams sometimes. I do descriptive stuff for blind people and advocate for accessibility options on the side. I'm the reason for Disco Elysium's accessibility patch that's coming eventually and I'm the reason fully blind people can play Siralim Ultimate. Slowly. With OCR. But still, it's possible now ehrre it wasn't before.

Same. Big eye roll.

Bigger fish to fry, and all. I sound like a broken record, but just use it as a learning example for them & move on.

I don't really like it when people tell me, "and you've accomplished so much despite your hurdles." I know it's meant to be nice, but it always rubs me the wrong way.
DrillInstructorJan 2 points 2y ago
Oh god yes. I've accomplished a decent amount for anyone regardless of hurdles, I think, I don't need to hear that.

On the other hand they don't mean anything by it.
DrillInstructorJan 3 points 2y ago
It's annoying, I get it. I just try to take the position that at least it's a genuine attempt to be positive. It might get into your head that it's patronising, and it is, but I'll take patronising and positive rather than someone saying oh god she can't see isn't it tragic.

But yes I am sort of astounded sometimes how crap people expect me to be. I have to say it is mainly a rural America thing. People in the UK are a bit more informed. Bubba and Merle from Spotweld, Nebrahoma, population 100, tend to be a bit less cosmopolitan.

It happens to me when people find out I'm a touch typist. Wow, you can actually type without seeing.
DrillInstructorJan 1 points 2y ago
One of the things about that is most people actually can do it, they just don't know!

Just tell them about the F and J keys.
Emms246 2 points 2y ago
Has anyone ever got that question like
"Do you dream with your visual impairment???!"
Like, seriously?! Duh. What else would I dream in
I get maybe that question could differ if someone had normal vision and recently changed but this was my brother who knows I've been visually impaired all my life...

Literally two days ago a girl nearly teared up when I told her I'm going to university. Because I guess blind people dont seek education???
Apprehensive_Art3339 1 points 2y ago
I get it. Because why are they sharing it with you? Either they think it’ll be inspirational to you (like, “See? They did it and you can too!”) but I think if can feel like something negative. It can feel like either they think you aren’t good enough because you aren’t doing things like that, or to show that blindness doesn’t have to be this sad awful thing because look at what one persons did!

It’s inspiration porn, usually written in a way that makes some able bodied people feel better since disability oftentimes makes them feel uncomfortable.

Want to make them feel uncomfortable about sharing it with you? Ask them why they are sharing it with you... I bet they’ll start acting fairly awkward. Or they’ll be completely oblivious.

It kind of makes me feel like a Victim I do not know if that makes sense to anyone
