Robotic household helpers (self.Blind)
submitted by Dorfner
Hi everyone.

If any of you use "robot" vacuum cleaners, I'd appreciate your feedback on the best ones. As it is now, I'm in possession of a model that basically just plays songs and blinks lights that are supposed to indicate an error condition that can't possibly be discerned without reading a user manual.

I'd like to buy a model for my increasingly blind mother, and I would appreciate recommendations on what the blind and visually impaired prefer.

I'm at the point of asking iRobot to make a Roomba that has bright flashing lights so she can see it, if it ensures that she doesn't trip over it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have an entry level/low mid-range Xiaomi. It is pure white so it a good contrast against most floors. It is also noisy, so hard to trip over it. As it has a mobile app that makes controlling it much easier. Also it can talk, which I find not that useful. As this is just a Chinese cheap model these advanced functionalities are poorly implemented and I basically press the start button on top of it when I want it to clean.

My vacuum goes around in the room in S shape, so way easier to predict where it is than the basic models that clean randomly.

Advanced models create maps, you can create forbidden zones, can be programmed when to clean, etc. and they are the most efficient/quick ones. They can even empty their own bin if you are willing to buy the top models.

I guess if you want bright lights on it you can do a DIY project, with a LED strip and a rechargeable battery pack.

For reference: I have RP and I'm visually impaired but autonomous for 99% of the tasks

We have a roomba 980. Best purchase ever, as we have 2 cats.
You need a rather flat house and make sure to remove any object that may be on the floor before the robot vacuums.

There is an app to configure the robot, schedule it... I don't remember to what extend it's mandatory to perform the initial setup. The app is handy as it has a feature to ask to robot to emit sound to locate it if it's stuck. I don't know if the app is accessible.

The robot has a bunch of buttons that be used to ask it to start vacuuming.

I’d like some suggestions as well! Since I am paralyzed it would be great to be like… “Alexa protect the castle!“ And it launches one of those smart roomba’s. Although my house is the opposite of open concept so I’d probably need one of the more expensive ones that can map or scan the layout of the floor :-)

I really want a little robot friend dumbly bumping into walls haha.
