Recruiting to test a prototype for a text entry study (self.Blind)
submitted by Internal_Perception

(Edit) Thank you all so much for showing interest in our study. We have enough participants for our first iteration, but if you would like to be contacted for our next iteration please send me a PM so I can contact you again in the near future!

Hello all it is nice to meet you! I am a PhD researcher at Cornell Tech's Enhancing Ability Lab.

Feel free to ask any questions down below if anything is not clear or you are confused about something and thank you for your time!

Our research groups at Cornell and the Michigan Technological University are studying the accessibility of silent speech entry for users with visual impairments, particularly whether it’s possible to use it as a means of text entry. For this first iteration, we’ve created an online website with an accessible keyboard and we’re conducting a study to gather information about our virtual prototype. We’re recruiting participants who are 18 or older, are based in the United States, and have a visual impairment to test the feasibility of our prototype. All you need to participate in is to have a smartphone.

This study will be done remotely over Zoom. The study consists of 3 parts: an introductory interview, the experiment where we will have you enter text while recording your actions, and a follow-up interview. In the first interview, we will ask for some basic demographics information. Then we will explain to you how to access and use our webpage, and once you are comfortable with using it, we’ll give you some prompts to enter text through our online keyboard. In the follow-up interview, we’ll ask about your experience and feedback, which we’ll use to keep improving our prototype.

Your identity will be kept completely anonymous if we publish the results of the study. Participation would take approximately 45 minutes total, and we would provide a $15 Amazon gift card as compensation for your time. Keep in mind that for this first iteration, we only need a small number of participants, but we can keep you in mind for the next iteration so feel free to contact us!

If you’re interested in participating, please PM me or leave a reply so we can set a date and a time to send you the consent form and do the study.

i'm confused, an online keyboard? Why would I not just use the system keyboard, dictation, or braille screen input? Or just a standard keyboard on a desktop or laptop computer?

Hello, thanks for asking. We are using an online keyboard to be able to record all interactions in a precise way, and also we can use a customized word suggestion interface. This can't be done through the system keyboard unless we develop a mobile app. The online keyboard design is very similar to the system keyboard both in iOS and android

Hello!

First of all, thank you for reaching out. Could you please share with me an email where we can communicate through? Or you reach me out to my email reg258@cornell.edu

The goal of this first iteration is to find out if we are able to get enough information from the video and from the user interactions to be able to recognize face gestures and turn them into actions in the smartphone (In this case, typing).

We might have enough participants for the first iteration, but allow me to confirm with you tomorrow if we can have you as one of our participants? If it's not the case, I can contact you again as one of our participants for our next iteration.

Cheers!
