Do blind people experience body dysmorphia?(self.Blind)
submitted by All_Might_Senpai
Would it be worse or better than sighted people?

In general, blind people can and do get everything, physical and mental, that sighted people do. There's one weird excpetion, which is that people blind from birth never get schizophrenia. Nobody yet understands why this is.

That’s a super interesting claim. Do you have an article or study about it? I’d love to read more about this.
Kind of a head-scratcher, people don't have a great handle on it yet.

I have never heard that before. Although I have heard that rapid horizontal eye movement (like nystagmus) is a sign of early onset schizophrenia in children. I wonder what the connection is.

I'm not totally blind, but I still do. It all started in middle school where all the girls were stick thin and I was at a healthy weight, a little bit above too thin and every girl at the school told me I was fat.

Im sorry this has happened to you. Were you able to see your body to compare what you heard vs what is said?

Yup, and I felt horrible because I wanted to look like them.

I’m legally blind. And I’m a 16 year old girl. I absolutely hate my body all I see is fat. I can’t see the curves just that overall shape that’s too big when I look in the mirror. I didn’t have it severe enough to be considered a eating disorder but I did have disordered eating. I would make myself throw up a lot after everything I ate and then I would go through times when I just wouldn’t eat in the first place. I was hospitalized for it once after I threw up EVERY single thing I ate for 2 weeks straight.
People can tell me I’m beautiful all they want but all I know is that my clothing size is too big and that I can feel my fat. And my stomach isn’t flat. And I get told that I’m chubby so I believe it. So visually impaired people can most certainly have body dysmorphia. I mean just think about it if you even if you just avoid the mirror but look at your body one part at a time it seems big and you can pull at your “fat” even if you are in shape you probably aren’t rock solid.
