Help tutoring a blind 13 year old (self.Blind)
submitted by MemeMomTina
Hello all!

I’m a caretaker for a blind 7th grader. I help him navigate online school and keep up with attendance and assignments. Through the pandemic he has not had a consistent helper during school, so most techniques we use for studying are cobbled together from different people with him telling us what works. He has had an okay time with school and is very bright so he’s making good grades. The problem we’re having right now is taking notes for math. All other notes he can do himself, but during his math classes we have not figured out a way for effective note taking. He is about to go into advanced math next year so I’m trying to help make sure he’s ready. He has access to math Braille tiles, an iPad, and me.

Does anyone have any advice on how to help with studying or note taking for math?

By online school do you mean live/zoom calls or a schoolwork app. Could you record the sessions online or with a dictaphone and listen back at his own pace

His math teacher recorded herself filling out a fill in the blank worksheet and the students are supposed to follow along and fill out the same sheet digitally. We tried pausing each time she said something in the blank box and me telling him and him telling me what to fill in, but it just lead to a really disconnected experience for him. This is how she’s finishing out the semester so she asked him how he would like to take notes except he’s never had to take notes during a math class. Basically she wants something to prove he watched the lesson except he can’t exactly just type how to use the distributive property into a google doc

I think the teacher needs to adapt for him. It's the teachers responsibility to make sure the child can access the curriculum. She has to think outside the box. Does he have to fill in the form in real time, can he get the video earlier, can she email the form to him in advance can she break up the video into smaller segments?

Thank you. Yeah, it’s rather frustrating, how is he supposed to know he’s a child? I’ve only been working with him a few weeks and I just feel bad that I can’t make this easier for him.

Yep, one issue my daughter has is her memory Nd distraction, her school support worker keeps telling her she needs to work on it (shes9) but won't giver her ideas and any we come up with arent allowed. Like writing the note/message/ reminder immediately in her journal or back of hand. Or maybe she keeps her bottle in her school bag so she doesn't forget to bring it home
