How can blind person take notes during a phone call?(self.Blind)
submitted by Mindless_Poet_9453
Is there any app or other solution for that? Is this really a problem you care about?
meeowth16 points2y ago
The same way they take notes when they aren't in a phone call.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]3 points2y ago
I assume apps like Voice Memo is a way to do that, but you can't really use it during a call

is this the way it works?
gunfart2 points2y ago
You do know that keyboards are a thing, right?
meeowth2 points2y ago
I guess it depends why you suddenly need to take notes during a call. 100% of the time they will email me what they want me to remember if I ask them to
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]2 points2y ago
same for sighted people like myself
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]-7 points2y ago
so apparently this isn't a big deal :)
I'm working on Android app that could be handy for use cases like this, but it's not compliant with accessibility guidelines yet
and in case there would be any interest, I could fix all the issues to make it useable for your community
Wait, is this just self promotion of your app you, a sighted person, made for blind people?
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]0 points2y ago
Not exactly, I'm rather collecting feedback whether the app make any sense for this use case. The promotion would rather be on Google Ads or Facebook.
But first I need to build something meaningful.

You could record the call? You could mute the call and use an old fashioned voice recorder, i'm sure they even have digital voice recorders now. I have an old android device that I just use at home on wifi for various things, it is not my actual phone, so if you have a spare android or apple device they still are very useful even if they aren't active with your phone plan. You could still use a note taking app on that or use a land line / VOIP phone instead of your cell.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]0 points2y ago
Is your Android version 8 or above? If so you could checkout what the app, does
and if such functionality is useful for you I can fix issues that make it not very accessible yet
vwlsmssng4 points2y ago
1. Pull up MS-Word on the computer in front of you and type away while balancing phone under chin.
2. Summoning a nearby sighted person and ask them to write something down.
3. Writing in thick black felt pen on a shorthand notebook or other paper pad (works for partially sighted though result may be mostly illegible.)
These may be hacky solutions but any alternative needs to be at least as convenient and accurate.
Any alternative needs to work well while VoiceOver (iOS) or Talkback (Android) is running.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]2 points2y ago
Thanks for response! That's pretty close to my idea of how this could work now
4humans4 points2y ago
Type them out, write them in braille, use a note taker, have the relevant information provided to them, speech to text. There are a lot of options it just depends on user preference.
epic_null1 points2y ago
How does one write in Braille? When my dad wanted to send his blind mom a card, he had to use thick paper and hammer in the dots - a process unlikely to be practical during a phone call.
4humans3 points2y ago
Using a brailler, slate and stylus, braille display, braille note taker or a computer and embosser.

Not sure why everyone is saying this is no big deal, because it is for me at least. I'm a software developer, and sometimes a 20 min phone call with a client will result in \~30 items I need to have remembered / written down that I need for later.

Some / many clients don't like e-mail, and prefer phone, so I have to take this information in via phone. I can't write down notes via pen and paper for obvious reasons, and I need both hands to type.

Right now I usually just unplug my headphones from my computer, hold my phone to my ear with my shoulder, and type the notes out while apologizing to the client for having to listen to my screen reader. It's a pain.

Not sure what the solution is though. Best I can think of is maybe a headset with microphone, one ear is the phone conversation, other ear is my screen reader. No idea...
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
>Right now I usually just unplug my headphones from my computer, hold my phone to my ear with my shoulder, and type the notes out while apologizing to the client for having to listen to my screen reader. It's a pain.
Yep, and having entire call recorded doesn't really help as you can't easily find the information you need afterwards.
There are apps that offer live note taking for zoom and mine is for regular phone calls. So if you are Android user it might be handy (someday, when I make it accessible)
DrillInstructorJan3 points2y ago
Screenreader in left ear, skype call in right ear. It's amazingly possible to listen to one or the other at will.
zersiax2 points2y ago
Had a quick look at the page over at $1. I have no idea what the app is about because everything is explained in images without any alt text. Not a very good first impression, I must say.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
Thanks! That's a fair feedback, need to fix that.
The images don't explain much as well. Google Play listing
The only reason for $1 is that you cannot advertise apps that are not public yet, and some landing page is needed to redirect users to Google Play. And my hope was that
"Hassle-free phone calls. Save time. Turn words into action"
is enough to convert some visitors into users.
codeplaysleep2 points2y ago
I just type things out.
I don't use my phone for note-taking. Regardless of my eyesight or the source of the information or something else entirely, it's far too inefficient.
BlakeBlues2 points2y ago
Writing, braille, typing, voice recordings on another app. Recording the phone call.
Amonwilde2 points2y ago
I can take notes when I'm at my computer and can type. Otherwise, it's difficult.
If I'm at my computer while on the phone, I'll have a text file open and one earbud in one ear while either having the phone on speaker, or, sort of holding it between my shoulder and my other ear. If I have my bluetooth headset on and paired with my iPhone, it's much easier!
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
Should be doable with just one tap. Speech recognition tech isn't perfect, but already does less mistakes than I do when typing stuff on my iPhone.
chovihanni-VIP2 points2y ago
I use my voice recorder and let the other party know I need to record. Then I listen and if need be type them into an app such as Word then that will read back to me and I can edit
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
Awesome, I want to make this all happen on your phone (single device) and require just one tap (or double tap on power button).
Sorry it's not accessible yet, but thats what I want to fix in case someone is going to use it.
chovihanni-VIP1 points2y ago
I can use the recorder on my android phone and that can be uploaded to another app which will type my text that I can then save and edit. For me, honestly, I know how to do it. My blindness is from brain trauma so sticking to stuff I know is much easier than trying to learn something new...especially when there is no accessibility to get through the instructions.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
All this feedback is super valuable, I'm rather learning, not trying to acquire customers here :)
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
And it sort of can hear the stuff from the past so you can tap that button after the thing that needs to be captured has been pronounced.
Prefect3162 points2y ago
If at a computer, it's easiest to just type notes in Wordpad or Docs. When out and about, I prefer to use my AirPods in conjunction with my Notes app, so writing things down is quite easy especially if you enable braille input.
Tarnagona2 points2y ago
Put phone on speaker or Bluetooth, so both hands are free. Have text file open on computer. Type notes on computer. This is how I take notes for phone calls, meetings, &c. If it’s a very short note, like a phone number, I’ll probably grab a piece of paper and write it down (I have enough sight for that) or use the Notes app on my phone.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]2 points2y ago
Thanks for your response. So would you bother installing an app, in case it would let you take a voice note from phone call with one tap? Or this problem doesn't really exist
Tarnagona2 points2y ago
I don’t think I’d bother with an app like that, no. I already have a pretty good system, and I wouldn’t want to take a voice memo while talking to someone else; it’d feel rude, like I’m interrupting our conversation. Sometimes I have to ask for a pause to catch up on notes, but that still seems less disruptive.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]2 points2y ago
Okay. I see.
There are apps for "non-intrusive" note taking. Is passively listens and keeps last minute of mic audio in the buffer, and when you need to capture a note from a lecture you just tap a button, and it saves voice fragment around that moment, converts into text and allows you search your notes later on.
Mine allows doing similar trick for phone calls.
You don't really need to talk to it.
Marconius2 points2y ago
If I have to take notes, I'll open my laptop and type into TextEdit. Easy enough. If out and about, a braille display with a notetaking function works fine.
macadamia_owl1 points2y ago
You can just start any dictaphone app while on call too on any phone and then edit recording to cut off irrelevant parts,, use it as voice memo note talker.
On Android there are some apps that are able to do audio recording while calling: you can choose if your voice only should be recorded, whole conversation or all audio from phone. There are floating note taking apps that automatically open on calls and you can type text with keyboard they stay after call ends. They automatically remember time, date, caller if you allow it it's all customizable. Other call note takers are more like sticky notes you type in with keyboard too. On Android you can as with iOS end call with power button.
devinprater1 points2y ago
I make the call on Google Voice, on the computer, and so I can go into a document or something and just write notes there. Eitherwise, I use braille, or do the thing of holding my phone with my shoulder, and typing the notes on the computer.
snow6711 points2y ago
I put the phone on speaker, then open memo and repeat the important information. "So you said 500 Fake Avenue? Got it."
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
Voice Memo on iPhone can capture audio during a phone call?
snow6711 points2y ago
I use Android and memo works during phone calls. It won't record what the caller is saying, but you can make notes.
Mindless_Poet_9453 [OP]1 points2y ago
I see, that makes sense. Memo can't capture stuff from the past though - so you need to repeat
guitarandbooks1 points2y ago
I have another idea for this type of situation but haven't tried it out yet to see if it works or not...

If I am taking a call on my iPhone, I wonder if I can have the voice memos app recording on my Apple Watch so I can take notes that way? Hmmmmm.
HealthyChoice13631 points2y ago
I just use BSI whilst on a phone call to type out my notes
