How do you describe yourself? (self.Blind)
submitted by Tarnagona
I’d love to have a conversation about language, and how you choose to describe yourself in relation to your eyes. For example, I usually describe myself as mostly blind, as it seems to get the point across well, and I hate being described as suffering from blindness (I’m not suffering), or having an eye disease (makes me sound contagious). What about you?

just blind.

I just say I'm blind. It's easier.

I usually say mostly blind, too! I used to say legally blind, but I think that causes more confusion.

I used to say legally blind, too, but like you, I found it tended to cause confusion. I think most people don’t realize there is a legal definition for what counts as blind.

"I'm a ciss caucasian straight man born blind. My pronouns are he, him, and that blind guy"

When I lost vision after my surgery in 2019, I was completely blind. My wife struggled when telling people about me, and so I told her to just say I am blind. I couldn't see anything for about four months. I gained some vision back afterwards, but am still legally blind due to visual field defects. So for a while I said legally blind. Now, two years later, I tend to just say low vision or visually impaired.

Blind, so I don't have to explain what profound low vision is or guess how many fingers someone is holding up.

God, that was always the most annoying thing as a kid. As soon as they learned I was visually impaired, “how many fingers am I holding up?” If I can tell you, it doesn’t make me less blind. I’m glad adults have less tendency to do this, at least the people I encounter.

Legally blind.

Visually impaired, and then I volunteer details if asked. I went with legally blind for most of my adulthood and stopped because people always acted shocked.

Blind as the proverbial bat.

I use low vision because it’s easier than legally blind.

Blind, legally.

Used to say low vision. Now I just say blind, or blind / low vision, and occasionally visually impaired.

I still have usable vision so currently I prefer to say legally blind. I don’t know what other term I could use.
Tarnagona [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I have useable vision as well (I’m very sighted for a blind person), and used to describe myself as legally blind, but it seemed like this tended to cause for confusion, as people weren’t familiar with the phrase. So I call myself mostly blind, which seems to get the point across better, though may also sound a little more harsh.

Blind as hell if I have to, although most of the time I'd rather talk about almost anything else about me!
