The price of a ride with a Lyft and Uber is making it difficult to keep my doctors appointments.b(self.Blind)
submitted by DSighted
Hello my blind and visually impaired friends!!
I am writing today to invite you to “RidesForLives”. A community created to focus on how we can ask ride-sharing companies such as Lyft and Uber to offer discounts to people with physical d, who otherwise do not have access to a means of transportation.
I can’t speak for everyone, But I know that I have numerous doctors appointments throughout the month. This adds up to a lot of rides back-and-forth. Paying for Lyft and Uber is absorbently expensive and mass transit is not what most would call safe. Para transit is available, but with a wait window of up to an hour on either end of your pick up time can add up to a lot of time wasted in a day.
Plus. The blind community is an entire market that can easily be reeled with an offer like that from Lyft or Uber. This would also help them build their company in areas where mass transit/paratransit is not available. So please come join us at “RidesForLives”.
Let’s get this wheel in motion, so we can see the world to (metaphorically speaking)
Thank you everyone!!

Do you have a link or a website?

No. Just a sub Reddit for now. Sorry if there’s any confusion this is all been started from scratch. I am trying to get a little bit of a base together to pull together some resources.

This is an awesome and important initiative. I do rely on Uber and Lyft, but the NDIS only pays $136 a fortnight as the full amount and that just isn’t enough if you rely on Uber to get to/from work. I know the Taxi Subsidy Scheme exists, but the NDIS constantly threats to cut it, and Victoria offers subsidised Uber rides but not the rest of Australia. If this gets off the ground in America, I’m happy to help promote it here in Australia too.

I only have the sub Reddit for the initiative at the moment, not a website. Sorry if there was any misunderstanding. I am starting this from scratch, and would really love to enroll as much help as possible getting this off the ground!!

I don't know what state you live in, but in CA there are services for that for the blind and disabled that are free. Perhaps contacting your city or state offices and asking them.

Lyft and Uber are well known for policies that discriminate against PWD, especially those who have service animals. I don't remover which was sued but they list and redesigned their app/policies to get around the terms of their judgment. I doubt seriously you'll get much cooperation from them.
I don't know how widespread ITN is but they're specifically for folks with visual impairments and work really well. They have no time windows and door to final destination assistance. They're less expensive than the other two, as well. This may be the option you're looking for and I'm sure they'd expand to your area if the interest existed.

A couple of years ago I tried to get Uber to provide discount services (driver only gets paid) to no movement. Hopefully, you can make them choose a better option.
