My Grandfather is slowly getting blind, how can I help him?(self.Blind)
submitted by gary-throwaway12
Hi all. My Granddad is 76 and has always had a terrible vision. He's had some operations done. And now it is only getting worse.
I thought it would make sense for him to start learning Braille language soon once he can be his own teacher. I have ordered a book for learning it (as for a teacher AND learning materials), or to get him a pack of cards that we often play with - one with Braille on them. I found some special keyboards too but they seem pricey...
Is there anything I should think of, something that would make his life easier, something he can do now, so he struggles less once his vision gets worse...
Thank you great people.

Are there any voice assistant devices around him that he is comfortable using?
Does he already have a smartphone that he is comfortable using?
Does your grandfather's country have a national association for the blind? $1.

The first thing I would ask is how he deals with technology. A smart phone can do wonders. Braille might not even be that useful.

How is his orientation and mobility (o&m) ? Has he reached out to local blind charities? They can provide training, tech, audio books, large print books.
