The problem with "ableism" (A blind friend of mine made a video I found interesting so I thought I'd share.) (youtube.com)

That was interesting. The first part about not understanding what it is truly like for people who have disabilities is how I have discussed it in the past as well.

I agree with your friend, but at the same time I’m tired of teaching, explaining, and having to constantly stand up for myself when people make assumptions. Fixing the issues people with disabilities face cannot be on us alone—we have enough struggles sometimes. I just hope we find allies and friends who can help share the load.

Sometimes that happens, like one time when I walked into a grocery store with some friends and this guy came up trying to tell me “no dogs allowed” and before I even opened my mouth, both my friends were emphatically telling him it was a guide dog. We need more of that please!

Thanks for watching it. I thought he did a good job too.

I never tire of explaining it to people but I definitely get that not everyone is like me. Honest to god, if we had more accurate representation in media, that'd be a big help. But that's not a uniquely blind thing. :P

Preach! And those of us who are exhausted are happy to have those who enjoy explaining to take some of the load. :)

Christ, if I could get guaranteed transport, I'd do it every goddamn day and off the cuff besides so each speech (and Q&A) would be a little different each time. Blindness, asthma/COPD, fibro, accessibility in games, realistic integration into the workforce for the disabled, all that shit.

Pull my chain and watch me go.
