I just got an new Xperia phone. It’s my first android phone. I managed to turn on talkback at setup by holding down the volume buttons but I’ve managed to do something wrong. I can hear the talkback sound effects but the speaking voice has gone. I feel like I must have muted the voice but talkback is still active. No idea how to get the voice itself to start speaking again. Anyone aware of a gesture of some sort?

Ok ... this may not actually be something you did. Try suspending Talkback and then turning it back on. If you still have no speech, you may be running into an Android glitch. When I got my phone, I'm in the Netherlands, Talkback spoke until I clicked the actual start button for the setup wizard, after which it stopped speaking but the sounds were still on. Only way I managed to fix was to have someone switch it to a different voice, unfortunately, so I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah I think it was a glitch. Once I got a sighted person to tap get started, it started talking again. It feels quite clunky compared to voiceover on iPhone

Talkback works better on native Android phones vs. ones that have an overly-skinned OS.

Which phones are those? Like the Pixel? Or maybe the galaxy line?

The Pixels or anything in the Android One program should probably give the best experience. There are a few in Android One including a bunch of Nokias which I have not tried but are quite affordable. Samsung doesn't seem to be bad these days either, and they have now combined their screen reader with Google instead of using a separate app.

You might have accidentally turned down the volume of Talkback. If you're new to Android, everything has a different volume. Media, notifications, etc. Pressing the volume up or down changes the levels based on what sound is being output.

Are you sure Talkback is still on? You can draw a capital L with one finger to access Talkback settings to check it. It only has an On/Off functionality.
If you have Google Assistant enabled, you can try "Hey Google, turn on Talkback"
