Looking for a gift for my grandfather (self.Blind)
submitted by hell0mynameis21
long story short my grandfather recently bought me a car and I wanted to get him a gift but we just got the news that he's going blind and everything I was going to get him would require vision and I was wondering if someone could help me come up with gift ideas for him. I live in Ontario and he lives in Florida and I have about a month before he's fully blind

I'm open to any suggestions and money isn't an issue. I can't go see him because of border issues right now.

Maybe something that is tactile, or scent related.. he's going blind but he has other senses thats going to be heightened.
Little story. I'm Deaf, has been since birth.. my family has always thought by giving me things that requires listening would "cure" my deafness.. like audio books, talking clocks, etc.. 🙄😒 DON'T be like that..
GOOD LUCK 👍

Buy an Amazon Echo for the both of you. That way you two can stay connected with its features. The echo is not a blindness specific device, but its super useful.

Wood working?

A crafty artsy type thing that only needs the hands. A few chisels, whittling knives, and sand paper. Pair it with some nice smooth Basswood blocks and he'll be creating reliefs in no time.

What were you going to get him before? What does he like to do? That will help us suggest a nice gift 😊

oh yes, that might help.

I know he's very Christian and loves Christian art pieces and stuff like that. so I found a website called $1 which I know he'll like anything off of it.

he was an artist for many many years and he recently just sent me some art stuff so I could start painting myself, so I was going to paint him something ask well.

Those were the only two real ideas I had but I don't actually know much about him because he lives so far away I was never really able to learn a lot about him.

Hi. You could get him a talking Bible device or an audiobook version. Do you know hwhat Christian denomination he is a part of? Different denominations have different Bible translation preferences. If he is willing to get more into technology, he might like an Amazon Echo or an iPad with VoiceOver (built in screen reader software) activated. You should also help him get signed up for the NLS and an Audible subscription. I have heard of blind artists who paint, so you could do some research into adaptive techniques. It is also never too late to learn a new medium. You could send him some clay to experiment with.

There is a statue called Homeless Jesus, it is Jesus sleeping on a perk bench. Very touching. Miniature replicas are available.
