Reaching out to people of Austin, Texas on this sub (self.Blind)
submitted by Ready4aChallenge
Hi, I am currently planning on moving across to Austin within the year, and have started to set the wheels in motion! I'm a total, and currently work full-time in the UK here. I recently had a Zoom with the President of the NFB to discuss jobs and was looking at Vocational Rehabilitation Counselling roles, as it is very similar to what I do/have done here. I'd love to connect to discuss the more minutiae details around mobility, transport, best locations for being able to commute, but have access to places to walk, recreation etc. Many thanks

Texas School for the Blind might have good resources! They are one of the better national resources

๐Ÿ˜Š thanks, Iโ€™ve added a few of them on Linked-In and will explore what they have. The local chapter of NFB Iโ€™ll also tap into.

I live about an hour north of Austin, but the rehab center I'm scheduled to do independent living training in is in Austin. It'll be at the Chris Cole Center, through Texas Workforce COmmission.

More info here:

TWC might also be a good resource for work as it's been a little rough getting orientation and mobility and other resource personnel to follow up with me. At first I chalked it up to covet closure and everyone working from home, but Austin has loosened up and it's still rough getting responses.

If you still have trouble finding something later, you can try the workintexas.gov site too.

I left Austin a couple of years ago, but I lived there for 12 years, both north and south, and I am willing to help out.

If okay, I will fire you a DM so I have your contact. Iโ€™m currently doing 4 foundation degrees at the one time and I want to get them out of the way first, but would really appreciate the help ๐Ÿ˜Š
