Advice for getting back into running? (self.Blind)
submitted by quirky-enby
I’m a fat person with vision issues (we aren't sure why, but I have tunnel vision and can only see roughly a 19-degree field) and I have recently regained confidence to go back into running.

I’m doing a couch to 5k program and I’m loving it, but I’m trying to plan for the next steps where routes may change due to construction or when it snows, or if I become comfortable enough participating in actual 5k events.

Is it okay to reach out to a guided running program ask for a running guide while I’m training and still very slow/still having moments of walking? Or how may I phrase the question if I reach out to my neighborhood for volunteers?

Or does anyone have advice on how to adapt their white cane, if they choose to do so? I currently have what looks like a ball at the end of my cane and it’s helpful for when I’m exploring newer routes, but I’m unsure if there’s maybe something better out there.

Basically while I’m still very much in the learning stage, what support can I ask for from strangers and what things can I improve on independence-wise? I currently do a specific 5k route within my neighborhood, and send my friend my Google location each time I go out so she can drive out and grab me if there’s an issue.

ok, so not too relevant, but when I used to do gym and track in high school I created something called sighted guide running where my friend would hold one end of a towel and I the other and so we could run and he would help steer me that way.

But over all I prefer treadmills and stationary bikes and eliptical stairs to running.

Like some of the other responders here I just run with a buddy and we use a loop of webbing, it's fine. You're putting your life in that person's hands, but it works.

When I did some running last year, I just used the track at my local high school. I haven't personally used one but a running tether is also an option if you are running with someone sighted.

I run with roughly 15° usable central vision. Typically I slow down. If I’m running with others I follow them. When I’ve done mud runs my buddies run ahead and stand on the tree roots so I don’t trip on them. Try new things, safely. Find what works for you.
