Touching the News! Downloadable tactile graphics for the blind and visually impaired. (self.Blind)
submitted by LightHouse-SF
Have you wondered what certain iconic pop culture images or items really look like? Say, for example, the Academy Award “Oscar” statue or frequently used emojis? Or maybe you are interested in staying up to date with current events and news stories, like the secret code on the Perseverance Parachute. LightHouse is excited to bring you Touching the News! We will be producing tactile graphics available for download bi-weekly to bring the latest in local, global, and popular culture news to your fingertips! Vote on the graphic you’d most like to get your hands on on our Touching the News Poll page and stay tuned for the production of the winning graphic the following week. So, what are you waiting for, friends? $1 on your desired tactile graphic image today!

What kind of device would be needed or is this something that would be 3D printed?
LightHouse-SF [OP] 1 points 2y ago
You would need either a tactile graphic capable embosser, or a carbon ink printer, swell paper, and a PIAF (Picture in a Flash) machine. The PIAF machine will raise the carbon in the ink and cause it to raise from the special swell paper.

So it seems you vote every week for the image you want produced (Somehow?) and they produce that one and then I don't know how they get it to you. More in the coming days according to the website.

We take a poll every other week, offering three different possible images. We will produce the tactile graphic with the most votes and the file will be available to download for you to emboss on your own. This is our first launch of this new service, so it is possible the graphics can be produced in-house and shipped to you in the future (fingers crossed!) but for now it will be a downloadable file. If you visit $1 on the $1 website, you can subscribe to receive emails with links to the bi-weekly polls and downloadable tactile graphic file when they are ready.
