What are your thoughts on the widespread use of smartphones? (self.Blind)
submitted by soggy_milk
Those of you who were around before the invention of smart phones, did people just one day seem more distant and quiet? I'm just wondering how life must have changed for you given that people seem less sociable.

You know blind people can use smartphones too, right? We're not necessarily bothered by people's quietness because we can also be quiet.

My smartphone is an amazing tool for making my life more accessible. The biggest thing for me is the ability to navigate, and never be lost. I can just...go somewhere I haven’t been before and find my way around (mostly). I’ve also got a magnifier at hand all the time.

As for everyone else, the world really isn’t any less social. Before people had smartphones, they watched TV, or read the paper/books. And they’re still doing a lot of that, just through a different medium. Bonus, I have ready access to hundreds of audiobooks on my smartphone instantly, so I can also find things to read more easily.

The world hasn’t gotten any quieter or less social, just a bit different. We’re not just sitting around being sad while everyone else is on their phone, as we’ve got them, too. And a smartphone helps make the world more accessible to us.

Well, I remember the days of needing to write a letter to communicate with someone long distance. Smart phones have made that much easier & quicker.

Things didn’t really change for me in that way, I don’t have that many friends to have noticed a change in communication.
