How do you navigate through unknown areas? (self.Blind)
submitted by Eufafnism
Hey there!

My friend and I are working on a tool to navigate through unknown areas. Since we want to make it affordable and most importantly useful, we would like to create a so called "User Story Map". Therefore we need as many people as possible who are willing to talk to us about the challenges while navigating through unknown terrain.

If you'd like to participate, message me via PN. We are thankful for each and everyone who is willing to help us.

Love from Germany

I watched this livestream the other day. They’re people who are blind and visually impaired who talk about how they navigate. It’s a bit long, but they talked about what they wish they had in a navigation app.

That's a good starting point! Thank you!

Maybe you should design your product after talking to the people who might use it instead of before.

We were trying, but nobody replied so far. That's why I am trying to get people on board here on this sub

Are you familiar with any of the many apps that already are designed for navigation for people who are blind such as soundscape, lazarillo, moovit, blindsquare?

Like another poster said; we use our ears and a cane/dog. These kind of things have been done before and we have map apps, what makes your tool different?
Eufafnism [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I think a downside to a dog and/or a cane could be, that you don't have your hands free. With our tool you could navigate with nohing in your hands. Vibration on different parts of your body can show you where there is an obstacle or a hole.

We're in the very early state of development and suggestions and questions like yours would help to see whether we're even on the right track. Thus I invite you as well to have a zoom call with us to talk about it! We would really appreciate it.

I don’t need other things in my hands when walking.

It’s not for me so I’ll pass on the zoom call.

So you generally think it's a bad idea?
bradley22 1 points 2y ago
I do.

I'm confused as to what you are asking. I navigate using a cane. I reach out and feel for landmarks like brick on a wall, or a particular lamppost. I also use my ears. My sense of smell sometimes. Not sure what else there is?

Well, would you be willing to have a zoom meeting with us? We might find out that there is more to it than "just" using your other senses! Also for you it might be normal but we can't feel what you feel, so we need details. Details you probably feel are obvious but aren't for us. We'd be very happy to have a talk with you!
