Question about automatic language switching with voiceover on iOS (self.Blind)
submitted by liamjh27
Hi,

I’m currently learning Portuguese. I’d like to know if it’s possible to change which voice is used when voiceover switches while automatic language detection is on?
I have the Brazilian Portuguese voice in my rotor and Brazilian Portuguese set as my second most preferred language in the region settings. However whenever voiceover switches to Portuguese it will switch to a compact version of a European Portuguese voice which has different pronunciations of words as well as being significantly quieter than my English voice. Is there a way to set it to switch to the Brazilian Portuguese voice I have in my rotor?

As someone who natively speaks normative Portuguese (i.e.: the European kind), I wonder why you want to learn the adulterated version.

Also keep in mind that, if the app or website you're reading from has its language encoding set to European Portuguese, it's likely that it's also written in European Portuguese, and this is relevant because there are a lot more differences in grammar, spelling, and pronunciation between European and Brazilian Portuguese than between British and American English.

Haha, I have a few Brazilian friends and I’d love to be able to speak if I ever get the chance to visit.
Plus the course on Duo Lingo is Brazilian so I just kind of fell into it. It’s teaching Brazilian Portuguese from the way the words are pronounced but it does seem it’s encoded with European Portuguese :S

Op, to make sure the encoding is false, look at some Brazilian pages in Safari and see if the problem persists. I am pretty sure it just uses compact voices when autoswitching to reduce loading times , at least it did so in the past, so it may just be a default we can't switch, but give it a try :)

Once you’ve added the language back to the automatic language switching list and it’s showing up tap on the language and change the voice that it’s using

Thanks for the reply.
Sorry, i don’t understand. There’s not a list of languages to add for automatic switching to use? I can turn it on or off for the default voice and then under that is just the list for other languages in the rotor, which only has the Brazilian Portuguese one active. Sorry if I’m missing something. Thanks for the Thanks for the replSorry

Go to settings > accessibility > voiceover > speak settings>
Make sure detect languages is switched on
Flick down to
ROTOR LANGUAGES heading then flick down to

Add New Language… button

And choose the language you want.

Once it shows up in the list below the ROTOR LANGUAGES heading.
For example japans , the the pot selection is Kyoto compact,

Hit the Japanese language and switch the voice to Siri male .

I hope that’s clear enough.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve done. The only language in there is Brazilian Portuguese. I’ve then got the voice selected that I want it to use but the auto switch doesn’t use that voice when reading Portuguese. It tries to use the European Portuguese and not the one in the rotor which is Brazilian Portuguese.

The language may be encoded for European Portuguese and not Brazilian Portuguese
