Ever get tired of braking people's expectations? (self.Blind)
submitted by blind_system
I'm going for a computer science related degree, in a country where the blind are either massage therapists or customer service agents. And to be honest, if I manage it, I don't want to be praised or congratulated, or even presented as some kind of an example to follow. It doesn't feel worth it, to me at least. And I'm tired of people pretending that what I do are major achievements, when they're really not.

Thing is, people aren’t pretending that what you do is a major achievement; they really think it is, even if it’s not. Lots of sighted people have a really hard time wrapping their heads around what we can reasonably accomplish (more than they think). So it’s them genuinely being impressed, rather than pretending such.

That said, it can definitely be weird, having a stranger tell me how amazed they were watching me navigate a subway station...the same route I’d taken every day for over a year. I want people to be impressed with things that are actually accomplishments, not things that are me just living my ordinary life. I totally feel you on that point.

I get that totally.

I think there are things you can do, ways you can talk to people to get around it. Quite often if I'm working in town I'll get "how did you even get here?" and I'll say by train then by cab or tube or whatever, and as they're gasping I just play something fun on the guitar and hopefully we can get onto talking about that...

It stems, from what I personally think, is a lack of perspective. Never actually giving a thought to how someone can do something in a different circumstance.

It's like when some stranger sees me out and about using my cane on one of my bad days ( I generally can get by without use of it ) and telling me that they are amazed at how I manage to do it. Like, bro. Dude. Homeslice. I have no choice. It's either learn to adapt to my lifestyle as it now is or to essentially die.

You'd do the same if you lost your vision. Just.. Stop and think about it for a change. Ugh.

In my country the only two Educations catered to VI is masseuse and piano tuner.
Why is it massages? I never really understood that

People feel more comfortable being baked around somebody who can't see them. That's not why it makes sense, because it doesn't, it's just what it is.

I always presumed it was because sight isn't needed, it's a touch skill, or at least that way of thinking might have come from the past. Here, from the 1950s until about 10 years ago, it was music and craft/basket weaving would have been the "careers" open to VI and blind people. So society and government have in living memory told people "ah bless look at these wonderful disabled people doing so well" so it will take a while for society to unlearn that.

We either get "oh gosh isn't she wonderful for doing basic things all humans do" or "sure the doctors must be wrong, she can do everything another child can do"

Most people are terrified of being blind. Hate to break it to you but just what your doing alone is making people have a better view of blind/low vision.

People are more impressed by my ability to walk to the shop without hitting a lamp post than the are about me getting accepted into Princeton University for math. Though I think my best trait is that I can outplay most pro destiny 2 players and I only have roughly 25% vision :p

Honestly. I won hundred percent agree with you. I’m in middle school and I mean very intelligent student. Even by measures of academics is it meant for sighted people. However, there are some things that are really annoying in a way that I can’t really explain. For example, I just took a gifted and talented test and turns out I am double Honestly. But seriously? I know I’m a bit above average but I’m not some incredible person you should be made an example out of for everyone else to follow. I just want to be left as your average above average student. I don’t wanna be treated like some gummy got her some thing..
