Anyone good with iPhone? (self.Blind)
submitted by Born-1995
My mom uses VoiceOver on her iPhone 11, but the volume of the screen reader gets really low when she is on a call. Is there any way to make it regular volume during the call? It’s just so low that it’s barely audible and it defeats the whole purpose of the feature.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You might want to check the audio ducking setting. In the VoiceOver settings, under audio, there’s a setting called audio ducking. From what you’re describing, you may want to turn audio ducking off.
The purpose of audio ducking is to make the VoiceOver voice quieter when you’re trying to listen to audio from an application.

This isn't quite correct. Ducking is meant to make the sounds playing quieter, while VoiceOver stays loud, so that you can hear the speech better even while music or other audio plays. It's not meant to make VO quiet. OP will want to leave this on if mixing VO and media is a problem, though it doesn't generally kick in on phone calls.

Whoops! You’re totally right.

There's another setting called Auto-Select Speaker in Call in Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Audio which will automatically switch the call along with VoiceOver to speakerphone when the phone is not close to your ear. This setting is enabled by default, but when it's disabled, you get VoiceOver through the earphone all the time during a call, which might be the source of your problem.

She could try the volume rotor, though I'm not sure this will help much. Generally, VoiceOver is rather hard to hear during calls, because its audio quality drops to match the audio quality of the call and because the call audio doesn't duck. A tactile screen protector may help, as it will place a tactile dot on the 5 key and in other key areas. Using headphones could also make it easier to hear. I nearly always handle calls with AirPods or an Aftershokz headset for this reason.

Is VO going to the earpiece during the call? If it's put on speaker it should turn up. The volume buttons, during Vo's speech, should still work in a call.

It's theoretically possible to add volume to the rotor, turning it down there will cause a lowering on calls regularly, but that's quite an edge case.
