How can a person who is blind clean a cat’s litter box? (self.Blind)
submitted by Language_Nerd93
Hi! First of all, this is actually my first ever post on Reddit, so if I make any mistakes not addressed in any of the rules, please feel free to let me know! 😊 About a month ago, I adopted two adorable kittens, Millie and Molly, and while I can easily take care of their food, water and playing needs, I still find myself needing to ask for help where both scooping and replacing cat litter are concerned. Luckily, my family is extremely helpful and supportive, but I would love to have some more independence in this process, if possible. I would so appreciate any advice and thank you so much!!

I found it really easy to feel resistance from clumps with a grass litter like Smart Cat. You basically rake through the litter with the scoop until you feel something, then scoop it up and shake the excess off. Then you can drop it into a baggie or litter genie. Keep doing that until the rake goes smoothly through all of the litter. Once a month, dump all of the litter out into a trash bag and then wipe the box down and refill 4 inches with fresh litter.

Kittens go to the bathroom a lot, so you may have to clean the box twice a day. But generally it is a daily task.

So they make a 2 pan sifter system that would work. So it's two little pans and then there's a sifter grid. You set the sifter in one of the pans, pour the litter on top, then to sift just pick up the whole grid. Then you put the grid into the new pan and dump the sifted litter on top

That is so cool!!

These get clogged up pretty easily and actually might be harder to clean.

I don't know if this will be helpful but I've seen someone just start at one end, place the scoop on the edge and scoop all the way across the box. Once one scoop is done, move down the box a bit and repeat until you hit the other end of the box. Basically, scoop the whole box so you don't miss anything. You could also get a box that scoops itself. People love them but they can be pricey.

A self- cleaning litter box would be a dream, I’ll definitely consider one in the future

We had one and it jammed a lot.

We have a littermaid self cleaning box. It works best with the littermaid corn cob litter. You can use plastic grocery bags as liners for the catch box. My girlfriend is blind and has no issue with cleaning it. The only jams we have had were caused by using other cat litter.

Former humane society worker here. Litter type matters a lot. If you have a hard time feeling where the clumps are without them falling apart try a different litter type until you get one both you and your cats like. The cheap clay litter is really hard to keep clean.

My older aunt just uses disposable boxes and litter. I like using shifter boxes and clumpy litter. Just pick up the tray, jiggle it a bit, then dump it, put it back in the other empty tray, then dump the remaining clean litter in with fresh litter if it needs it and put the extra tray back under the one being used. Make sure to wear gloves and a mask, cats can spread bad parasites to humans through their poo!

Aw, congrats on your new family members! My cat is in my lap as I'm writing.

I'm totally blind and prefer to keep things very simple and affordable. I think my method is just as effective as scooping, if not more so, and minimizes waste. After using a self-cleaning box that my cat didn't take to, I got a conventional uncovered, high-sided litter pan. I use a hard-clumping clay litter like Dr. Elsey's or Fresh Step Lightweight. I have a huge box of waste bags that you tear off a roll, and then I bought a few boxes of disposable rubber gloves as close to my size as possible for the best tactile feedback.

I just put a rubber glove on one hand and take an open waste bag in the other. Then I search systematically through the box with my gloved hand and drop the clumps into the open bag suspended in my other hand. When I'm done, I peel the glove off from the wrist down so that it turns inside out and I don't touch the fingers. Then I drop the glove into the bag, twist it shut, and knot it before throwing it away.

I have a scoop for the catsitter, but I prefer the gloves myself because I don't miss anything or break clumps apart when I'm pushing them off the bottom, and my hands stay perfectly clean. I wipe the sides of the box with an enzymatic cleaner and do a full litter change once in a great while, too.

It might seem like you'd get too close for comfort with the gloves, but I haven't had them tear or let anything in, and I've just gotten used to how it all feels. Apologies for the TMI, but Another benefit is that I can easily find and isolate a stool sample for the vet when I need one; it's a different shape than the other clumps. And I can keep tabs on my cat's health by monitoring how often she's going, how firm the stool is, etc.

Oh that actually makes so much sense!! I also use Fresh Step so I know how defined the clumps can be. Thank you so much!!!

Oh, cool. I use their lightweight litter because it supposedly has a similar volume to the litter I bought that was much heavier. So it goes fairly far and I don't have to kill my back lugging a 40-pound bag around.

If you don’t mind me asking, does totally blind mean something other than completely blind as in you can’t see at all?

What about changing to a non clumping litter and then just emptying it completely every day? I use a pelletized sawdust litter and just fill the tray with enough for the day, empty it completely and give it a wipe with a disinfectant wipe.

If you can invest some money, there are automated Litter Boxes that do all the hard work for you!
