Folding cane vs Rigid (self.Blind)
submitted by HeftyCryptographer21
Hi r/blind. I was just curious on your guys' opinions on this. I currently have a folding cane, but it is kind of heavy, and I was considering buying another rigid cane from Ambutech. they are surprisingly cheap, and I am going away to university next year, so I was thinking that having 2 canes is a good idea anyway. Do you guys have a folding cane or a rigid cane? Or both? I am Deafblind, if that matters.
MostlyBlindGamer 9 points 2y ago
Having a backup for anything is always a good idea! You can have one with you and keep the other one in your room or you can even carry the folding cane in your bag.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
Makes sense. Is that what you do?
MostlyBlindGamer 4 points 2y ago
I don't always need a cane, so I carry a folding one in my bag. It's not as light as I'd like, in my hand, but it kind of disappears into the bag.

If I needed one all the time, I might actually prefer the lighter one and leave the backup at home or at work, but since college life can get pretty hectic, Murphy's Law makes a pretty good case for keeping it on you.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Yeah, I sort of thought that most people would think that. Cool to see so many people discussing it though.

I prefer a telescoping cane. My personal favorite is from the NFB. If you are looking to try a rigid cane I believe the national Federation for the blind does give one free cane per year. You may have to check their website though.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Thanks, but I am Canadian, so we do not have the NFB here.
Iamheno 2 points 2y ago
Doh! \*Homer head slap\*
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
lol, no problem. There does seem to be an assumption of Americanism on reddit.
Crafty_Dragon_roll 6 points 2y ago
I use a folding cane. I also have a folding back up as well. It's good just in case something happens to one of them. I also have a holster for it to clip onto my pants or bag strap.

I like that better than having to sit on it or prop it up against a wall somewhere. I don't lay it on the ground. The holster also keeps it folded unlike when I put it in the bag.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
fair enough. Do you find the folding cane can be heavy?
Crafty_Dragon_roll 3 points 2y ago
The one I use as backup yes, I find it can be heavy. But my new one is lighter when in use and I don't feel weighted down when it's in the holster on my hip either.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That's cool. I think I might stick with a folding cane.
Crafty_Dragon_roll 2 points 2y ago
I love the holster def recommend.
Apocalyptias 5 points 2y ago
Rigid is technically the best option for the best feedback, but a folding is way easier to deal with, especially if you have a sighted guide!
Always have two canes with you, and always own at LEAST 3 canes!
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Wow, three! Do you actually have 2 canes with you, or is it more an ideal you stick with for trips and such? If so, how do you carry the second one? Do you always have a bag with you?
Apocalyptias 3 points 2y ago
Not me, but my wife!
When she goes out for work she always has two, and being of the female variety she ALWAYS has a bag so that's how she carries them.
She has a Collapsible can she uses most of the time, and a folding cane is kept in her bag unless she's going somewhere with me.
BlindLuck72 2 points 2y ago
2 canes is smart, I’ve broken a few, and lost one once. Life happens good to have plan B
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Ah, that makes sense. I guess a lot of women have purses anyway. When you say collapsible, do you mean sort of like a telescope?
BlindRyan1 5 points 2y ago
I use a nose-high folding graphite cane and a shoulder-high LED fiberglass folding cane. I prefer the former and use the latter on night walks so I don't get hit by a car.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Is the LED one heavy? I feel like that one wouldn't be for me, but I am curious any way.
BlindRyan1 2 points 2y ago
It's heavier than the graphite lead one which is heavier than a straight cane but I like folding canes due to the fact that I ride in cramped vehicles. If you're not concerned about that, go with a straight cane. It echoes better.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
what do you mean about the echo?
BlindRyan1 3 points 2y ago
I mean when you tap the cane, it makes an echo (or at least good canes do) and allows blind people to "see" via echolocation. My O&M teacher told me this literally my first day so I understood why I had to make so much noise.
smkelly 1 points 2y ago
I've never seen/heard of a LED cane before. What part(s) light up and where do you get such an animal?

bigblindmax 4 points 2y ago
I've heard that rigid canes can give you more information through vibration/echo, but I've only ever used folding canes.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I am Deaf, fully Deaf so that doesn't matter to me. Thanks though! Do you like the folding canes?
bigblindmax 3 points 2y ago
Vibrations could help, those are more about feel than hearing. Tapping your cane on a sidewalk feels a bit different from tapping it on the street (just for example) and something like an NFB cane might make that difference more noticeable and reliable for orienting yourself. Honestly though, if you’re getting around alright with a folding cane I’d probably not bother with rigid except as something to try for the hell if it.

I have some usable vision and very rarely use my cane indoors, so I definitely prefer folding. It’s handy to be able to fold it on public transport too. Gotta be careful not to lose it though.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Makes sense. I use my folding cane right now, and I almost never fold it, which is why I was wondering. And yeah, I do use the vibrations from the cane a little bit.
bigblindmax 3 points 2y ago
Could be worth a shot then! Canes are a super cheap investment compared to other adaptive technology, so it’s no big deal if you try it and don’t like it,
ratadeacero 4 points 2y ago
Go for the folding cane every time. I'm just going off my wife's opinion. She actually prefers the weightier aluminum canes because they are less "bouncy". I accidentally got her one of the carbon fiber canes ones and she didn't like it because it was too light. She does use it when we are hiking in the woods.

If weight is your main issue, try the carbon fiber version. I just think it's nice to be able to fold that sucker up when it's not needed.
BlindLuck72 3 points 2y ago
You’re the first person I’ve hear say this but I agree. I had a light one that felt like it would blow away anytime a gust of wind came up!
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
yeah, a straight cane can be annoying. I don't normally fold mine up anyway though, so that is why I was asking. I normally just put it up against my shoulder if I am sitting. I have never heard of anyone preferring a heavier cane, but I guess that makes sense.
BlakeBlues 4 points 2y ago
I personally prefer the nfb cane for rigid canes, but I miss being able to fold my cane. Have a second is a fine idea, yes!
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yeah, that makes sense. I am Canadian, so we do not have the NFB here, but I can get one from amazon, or ambutech.
ShoshanaLi 3 points 2y ago
I personally always use a folding cane just for convenience. I’m never sure what to do with a rigid cane when I sit down in lecture, at a restaurant, etc. unless there’s a wall to lean it against, but maybe that’s a me problem haha
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Yeah, fair enough. I normally prop mine up against my shoulde, but it can be cumbersom.
codeplaysleep 3 points 2y ago
If I were a full-time cane user, I'd probably go with a rigid cane, because they can be so lightweight and they just feel so nice to use, but I'm not, so being able to store my cane in my bag when I don't need it is super important to me. So folding it is.

If you're in the US and want to try out a rigid cane, you can request a free one from the NFB. They're pretty nice! The only downside is that you can't change the tip on the free canes.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Cool, that seems smart. Thanks a lot!

I haven't used a ridgid cane in years. I always have a folding one with me. Mainly, because it can be folded up and stored on my belt when not in use.

I usually keep an old cane at home for a backup. I also have one at work just in case I needan extra.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Yeah, that seems to be a common theme here, that most people have a folding cane. Plus, I guess you can always leave a folding cane unfolded, but you can't fold a rigid cane.
BrailleWorks 3 points 2y ago
If you're looking for something between a folding cane and a rigid cane, a great option is a telescopic cane! They're usually easier to break down, too.

You can find this one $1 on Amazon. It has solid reviews and might be worth a look.

Best of luck!
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I hadn't really considered a telescoping one. I have heard they tend to collapse on themselves a bit to often. Can you comment on that? Also, do you have both a telescoping cane, and a folding cane, or just one? Thanks for the suggestion.
smkelly 3 points 2y ago
It has been many years since I used a telescoping cane, but I definitely had issues with it collapsing too much. I never found the connecting pieces to stay put quite enough. So if I hit something, one segment would sometimes get loose and slide around.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Cool, thanks for the suggestion.
SeptemberJoy 2 points 2y ago
Before I switched to a guide dog I used a folding cane with a telescoping as a backup. I found if I used a lighter touch with the telescoping cane it was fine. I would frequently bend (one even snapped) my folding canes as I was a fast walker and heavy handed - I still have my original telescoping cane as it would collapse rather than bend or break.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Wow, I don't think I have ever broken a cane! But I am glad to know that telescoping canes are more durable. Thanks a lot!
SeptemberJoy 2 points 2y ago
Only ever fully broke one - cracked pavement caught it, the handle caught my stomach and the sudden stop killed it. Was fortunate to be near shops and some lovely people taped it up so I could get home. After that I started holding it to my side instead of the proper centre position. Not sure if they're more durable with regular full time use but mine survived me lol
AntiAngelix 3 points 2y ago
Having both couldn’t hurt. Personally, I like the filling canes. Easier to throw into a back pack or tuck away when not in use (ie: sitting at a desk). My ex hated folding canes. Felt they got super dirty super quick. He had a cane that twisted into itself, similar to how a folding canes has section. Think, telescope style. When that one broke, he got a solid, non-twisting, non-folding cane. He really liked the twisting one, then the solid one, then the folding one.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Someone else recommended a telescoping cane, which is something I hadn't considered. I find it interesting that he hated the folding one so much.
AutisticPearl 3 points 2y ago
Having a backup is wonderful. Me on the other hand, I've got a folding cane because I got mine Susie in FB. I don't use it very often and in fact I mainly got mine because I haven't legally blind person use a participation purposes and if I'm out somewhere like a strip mall I'll use it if I'm by myself so people can see me when I'm crossing the street. Akshay full thing it's better there a little bit awkward but the rigid ones are it is portable.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Sorry for being dense, but are you saying that the folding canes are a bit awkward, but more portable than rigid ones? Also, even if you are not fully blind, you can still use a cane as much as you want.
AutisticPearl 2 points 2y ago
Yes I am.
HeftyCryptographer21 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Cool, thanks. I think that there is mostly a consensus about that in the blind community.
dancingdots 2 points 2y ago
I use a rigid cane because the folding makes my wrist hurt. It’s also much better for tactile feedback, and as a DeafBlind person who relies mostly on tactile feedback from my cane this is essential. I cant remember if it’s graphite or fiberglass. It’s been a few years since I bought one. I like my canes long because I’m a fast walker, and it was just too heavy. I have a folding and a rigid one though.

I don’t find the rigid overly annoying to deal with. I use it on trains, subways, busses, and taxis and it’s ok. It’s only a problem on planes. So if you’re flying bring a folding cane back up as carry on. The rigid can be stowed in cabin and they’ll give it back at the end.

I have an Identification cane also, for when I’m working my guide dog. Bus drivers always pass me up and taxi/lyft drivers are kind of dense and don’t realize it’s a guide dog. The identification folding cane helps.
