Retinoschisis question (self.Blind)
submitted by d00biusmaximus
I'm sorry in advance if this isn't the appropriate sub to post this to, but I couldn't find a retinoschisis sub so I figured this would be the next best place.

I am a 25 year old Male, recently diagnosed with retinoschisis. It started about 10 months ago, I was noticing what appeared to be a small shadow in a small portion the upper left corner of my vision in my right eye. It would be there for a few seconds, and then it would disappear in a quick "flash" for lack of a better explanation. I never noticed it appear, it would just be there all the sudden and then I would notice it. After a few weeks I went to the doctor who diagnosed me with retinoschisis, that had already developed a few small holes in retina.

He said there's really no treatment and essentially it's not anything to worry about unless the holes get larger and a retinal tear/detachment occurs, in that case obviously surgery would be needed. So I kind of moved on with my life and accepted that it might be something I'll have to deal with but cant do anything about.

Then, about 2 months ago, I began noticing a large amount of floaters in both eyes. I went back to the doctor and he said that it looked like a detachment could be beginning in my right eye and did laser surgery on it in hopes of scarring it so the retina didnt separate further from what I understand.

I have decent vision still (20/30 both eyes if I'm not mistaken) but am continuing to get check ups regularly to monitor it of course. But neither the flash or floaters have gone away and I was informed they might never do so.

If you've read this far thank you for your time, and here is my question:

One last symptom I've had that none of the doctors seem to take seriously, probably because they cant explain it, but bothers me immensely is when I look directly left or right as far as I can I notice a crescent shaped shadow in the vision of the eye looking over the nose.

To really explain what I mean, look straight ahead, then look as far left without moving your head as you can. In my right eyes vision (looking over the nose) I notice a large shadow that looks like a crescent shape, but not directly where I'm looking. Its about 30 degrees to the right of where I'm looking, if you think of vision as a 180 degree field of sorts with 0 being my nose. And vice versa, if I look directly to the right I see it in my left eye and it takes up about ~20% of my vision.

My question is simply if anyone else has experienced anything that sounds similar to this at all? My doctor seems to act like it's just some weird thing hes never heard of. (I am a veteran going to college and only have VA healthcare so my options for doctors are limited right now). So I'm going out on a limb and thinking maybe he doesnt know everything lol.

If anyone has had anything similar I'd love to hear your story and experience, and thanks in advance for your time if you read!

Sorry I don’t have any knowledge of your particular eye disease but I do know that the VA isn’t always the best. I would definitely suggest seeing an eye specialist/ophthalmologist outside of the VA for more answers if possible.
