I myself play tennis and I was just thinking and thought of this. The idea of it sounds very cool. I feel i’d have to do with sound right? Does anyone here play it?
bigblindmax7 points2y ago
I have a good bit of usable vision and I can serve, but that’s about it. My lack of depth perception makes it pretty much impossible for me. The problem with using sound for Tennis is that the sound is too infrequent and the trajectory of the ball is too unpredictable.
Beep tennis? Maybe.
[deleted]1 points2y ago
Yeah Beep tennis that would make sense, but yeah i can understand what u mean
iheartbaconsalt1 points2y ago
HAHA this is me exactly. Sure I can hit it once, but then it's gone. I've played a lot of Beeper Ball and bumper bowling.
BlindLuck725 points2y ago
I used to. I have tunnel vision so as long as I keep it directly I front of me I can play... just not very well.
I do play golf, as long as someone is willing to find my ball.
I also used to shoot pistols but decided showing up at the gun range with a white cane would raise too many questions
blind_cowboy3 points2y ago
You might be surprised. All I have is a small bit of light perception, I have my LTC, and after the first time at a range where they quickly learn you know gun safety they are very accepting.
The gun culture is like that though. Everyone seems to bond over a love of shooting. Unless you take a AR hunting. Some people still have a problem with that, but even that is changing especially thanks to hogs.
BlindLuck722 points2y ago
That’s awesome! I used to shoot competitively so defiantly know my way around range safety. I sorta stopped after I had cataract surgery I should go see how I do
blind_cowboy1 points2y ago
The range can be kind of limiting for me. I can shoot at sound at reasonable pistol distances and will occasionally do that on my land. At the range I’ll usually have someone give me verbal directions before my first shot, and then I’ll just work on trying to bring it back down to the same spot and get the tightest groupings I can.
I’ve gone to a couple of ranges where you can rent a personal bay with dirt berms on three sides, and I prefer those because you don’t have to wait for the line to shut down to change targets, it’s much quieter, and your shooting area is far less crowded. I hate indoor ranges.
Hey, I am willing to bet nobody has had a 9MM vs .45 or glock vs John Browning’s masterful creation argument discussion on this subreddit before! What do you prefer? Now you’re going to throw me off with something like .357 Sig.
BlindLuck721 points2y ago
Haha probably not! I primarily shot 1911’s. I had a limber 9mm and the ruger mKii /45. So basically everything had the same grip angle and slide release for training.
I shot most 45acp events but was pretty fast with a 9mm
That being said I can shoot anything well I’m a firm believer a good shooter can use an ok gun and outshoot everyone else reguardless of equipment.

The showing up with a cane at a gun range raising questions got me lol
BlindLuck721 points2y ago
Yeah I don't think they'd be the most understanding!!
Terry_Pie1 points2y ago
When I first got my firearms licence I only wore a "Vision Impaired Person" badge and didn't use a cane. The staff asked I not wear the badge when at the range.
I opted not to renew my licence about five years ago now though, partly because I thought I'd likely get questions when I showed up for my new licence photo with a cane. My main consideration was the dollar saving but.
Wish I'd kept it though. If the opportunity to get into blind shooting arises in my city I'll be on it in a snap.
BlindLuck721 points2y ago
Lol Blind gun owners, we are walking oxymorons.
changeneverhappens1 points2y ago
I'm a teacher for the Visually Impaired in Texas. Thanks for the field trip idea! I can't stop chuckling at your imagery but it's not a terrible idea. Gun safety is important. And beeping Easter eggs might make great targets!
BlindLuck723 points2y ago
For kids archery is fun!
Glad I could share a good laugh!
dunktheball3 points2y ago
I am legally blind and somehow still do good shooting free throws and 3 pointers in basketball, but I bet in tennis the ball would be hitting me in the face. lol.
Also my immediate thought was, but the dog keeps stealing the ball!
Iamheno3 points2y ago
Probably with a beep or bell ball? It might not be a very fast game, but outliers always exist. Look at the mountain bikers who echo locate.
casserole_cat2 points2y ago
Lol no then again I suck at every sport and always have. The only sport I’m good at is swimming I’m a very fast and strong swimmer and have actually managed to save a kid in a lake once by carrying him quite a distance. Oh and I get lucky in basketball sometimes. I used to do horseback riding and also archery. My dad always tried to put me in sports only to find out that I just will get hurt.
I think also since I’m legally blind I have to be playing with understanding and helpful people. But in middle school and elementary kids would use PE time to bully me and mess with me. Like throw the ball purposely hard at my face. Or with tag they would run me into a corner and throw stuff at me. Or tackle me in football for no reason like the ball was not even coming or anything. And all those things have sorta turned me off from sports. I’m also hard of hearing so sometimes if I’m not listening for your voice to warn me I won’t hear you. So I just end up getting hurt.
[deleted]2 points2y ago
Man sorry to hear that those kids are assholes.
Ant54771 points2y ago
Do you have videos of blind people playing tennis?
Ant54771 points2y ago
Do you have videos of this? I would like to put it on my show.
Terry_Pie1 points2y ago
Blind tennis is a thing. It's taken off quite well here in Australia.
Ant54771 points2y ago
Are you referring to totally blind people?
Terry_Pie1 points2y ago
I'm not sure what the lowest sight category is, but it is a modified version of tennis designed to be played by people who're blind and vision impaired. The ball is foam with a rattle in it and depending on one's sight category, the player is afforded more bounces after which they must strike the ball.

There's always Bullshit Badminton, where it's the job of the two players to work as a team and actually get the blind person to return a shot. It's possible we just made that up when we were under the influence of too much grolsch, though.
