Last night, I saw the WHOLE moon for the first time (self.Blind)
submitted by Tarnagona
Usually, the moon looks like a blob of light in the sky, sometimes a little brighter, and rounder, when the moon is close to full. But still, a fairly uninteresting blob.

Well, my fiancé has a telescope, and it was a beautifully clear night last night, so he got it out and set it up to look at the moon. So I had a look, too.

And for the first time in my life, I saw the whole moon. It was very close to new, so there was a sliver of light from about 2 o’clock to 7 o’clock, very clear, and well-defined. But the rest of the moon was also visible, as a round disc or sphere, a little lighter than the sky, with a kind of mottled texture of dark and light patches.

The difference between how I see the moon normally, and what I saw through the telescope was so huge it was a little mind-blowing. And I wanted share with a group of people who might get it. Because of course the telescope gives more detail to a sighted person, too, but also they just...see the moon’s shape all the time? Maybe not the dark part except in the right conditions, but it’s not going to be as mind-blowing. When people draw in the dark part of the moon in pictures because they just know it’s there, but turns out you can actually SEE that.

So that’s my story. Please enjoy.

I have very low vision, we seem to be in similar boats! My husband always talks about getting a telescope to show me what the moon looks like and so that I can see that there are stars (I can’t see the stars 99% of the time, sometimes I see a tiny dot and he always tells me it’s a satellite or Mars or Venus). Very happy for you! Can’t wait for my turn to check out that moon.

You could try using a pair of binoculars, too. I tried that once as a kid, and it wasn’t the detail I saw with the telescope, but did give the moon more of a shape that was still cool to see.

I think you’ll super enjoy the telescope, though! It was really neat to see so much moon.

I didn’t know you could see this much of the moon... Really thought it was just a blob of light...

Right? Sometimes, I’m blown away by just how much sighted people can see.

SAME! It makes me wonder what else I’m missing lol

$1, where a guy brings his telescope to the public and let's passerby look into the telescope. You can see (and hear) from their reactions how amazed people were when they first saw the moon through the telescope.

The thing is that not even sighted people can see that much detail on the moon's surface without a telescope, so seeing the moon through one is a mindblowing experience even for sighted people :)

I totally get it!! I have had low vision most of my life and so the moon just looked like a white spot in the night sky, i couldn't see any definition at all. It wasn't until I got binoculars for Christmas that I could see that it actually looked like a sphere

A song for you: Waterboys - $1

My wife has not much vision and generally would not be able to locate the moon in the sky. Quite a long time ago we went for a winter drive and walk out on to a frozen lake on a super full moon night. For me it was extremely bright; I could probably read regular print easily. As we walked she asked, pointing, "What's that." "Oh, that's the moon, it is extremely bright tonight." We then spent about 10 minutes looking at the moon. She was able to get a good sense of the colour and relative size in the sky, neither of which she had known or understood before. A few other times she has maybe seen the moon but with less certainty and clarity than that night out on the frozen lake.
