Anyone managed to install Emacspeak some time this decade? I'm ready to jump in, but it seems that all the instructions are really far out of date. I'm running the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
For those who don'tknow Emacspeak is an adaptation of the Emacs text editor for the blind. It's pretty great if you get it working, but in my experience is tricky to install and configure.

So ...Emacspeak is one of those products that either works on the first try or gives you no end of trouble.
The instructions, even though they are old, tend to generally work for the most part. Did you try to see how far you got?

I'm going to play around with it this week. Is it worth setting of viavoice?

Depends on you really :) I don't mind eSpeak in my Emacspeak but if you really want Eloquence there then yes, I'd grab Voxin off the Oralux website

1. Open a terminal. 2. Enter sudo apt-get install emacspeak 3. Choose espeak. 4. Done

I got it installed and running on my raspberry pi 4 and 400. Installed emacs, then emacspeak via the apt command. It gave me the option to choose espeak during the installation and it worked on the first try. Don't know if this is helpful, but it does work on the pi at least.

OK, this is making me feel like it's possible. Though I'm going to gio the compile route :)

I wrongly assumed you were going to ask about installing it on the mac. As I have it working on apple silicon.
For linux I would follow the standard steps. Install Emacs from your package manager clone the emacspeak repo, compile and you be ok. Get it running with espeak first. Then other speech servers
