BVI and Chemistry (self.Blind)
submitted by ButturdApple
Hey guys I work with a start-up company that is developing a tool to help BVI students learn chemistry and we want to expand to other topics, but one of the hardest things to do is market towards the BVI community and getting general buzz.

Do you guys mind looking over my webpage and Kickstarter page (I'm not asking you to contribute) and let me know how it comes across? The basic story is that we use computer vision and tactile pieces to help give BVI students more vision into chemistry, but I want to know if the alt text and text on the web pages are coming off correctly to the BVI audience.

Here is the website: $1

And this is the Kickstarter page (It might require login for Kickstarter): $1

As someone who’s legally blind and now preparing to take my AP Chemistry exam, I wish I had something more tactile to help me. For whatever reason in my experience “hands on” or “tactile” people think of labs, which are visuals. Graphs and drawings have definitely been the most challenging for me. That being said, I think we made the year work and I’m hoping for the best on my exam!

There appear to be a LOT of links on the landing page. I’d suggest presenting a description of the product immediately rather than having a Learn More button.

Would you like a quote for a WCAG 2.1 compliance evaluation?

can you tell me what a WCAG 2.1 compliance evaluation is? I feel like I'm missing out on something important :O

You're asking "is my site good enough for visually impaired users?"

As per usual, experts in any given field can translate that into a work order. Complying with the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA is generally accepted as "being high enough for enough for disabled users."

You want that because you're, presumedly, an empathetic human being, but it's also required for Section 508, so you can work with the government, in the US (like supplying schools).

You can have your site audited and you can work with people to make it compliant.
