Looking for people with lived experience using screener readers for assistive technology workshop (self.Blind)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working with a small group (less than 10 people) in the ARIA-AT Community Group to develop a workshop series that aims to better understand current barriers to usage of screen readers and other assistive technologies (ATs) and identify opportunities to develop the ARIA-AT web app ($1).

We’re currently looking for 1-2 U.S.-based people who have lived experience using screen readers to co-design solutions with us. You do not need any design skills to participate, and you do not need to be a professional tester.

The workshop consists of three meetings: the first two meetings will run as two, 2-hour workshops during the week of June 13th: on Tuesday, June 15th and on Thursday, June 17th.

The third and last session will run for 1 hour on or around July 8th and will involve a review of the implementation of what we co-create during the first two sessions.

I will be working with all members of this team to find a common time that works for everyone.

As a small token of appreciation for participation, we’ll also provide participants with an honorarium of $599 for participation in all the sessions.

Are these phone screen readers or computer screen readers? I have experience with both. (Former US-based software engineer before I lost my sight)

I would be more than happy to help, but yeah ...I'm in the Netherlands. Any particular reason you want only US-based applicants, particularly given almost everything is still remote because of covid?

I'm an accessibility professional, developer and every-day screenreader user but am apparently unsuitable because I don't live in an arbitrary location :)

Hi zersiax, I appreciate your reply. The reason for the request for US-based participants is for U.S. compliance for the honoraria and not because the workshop is location bound.

Compliance to what exactly, if I may ask? I realize the dollar is a US-based currency, and I also realize that international tax laws are tricky, but for something like this, I fail to see why these honoraria can't be transferred using one of the myriad international money transferring services out there, perhaps after the candidate in question fills out a w8ben.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's a great reason, I'm really just not seeing it :)
