Does anyone have a good recommendation for an android phone? (self.Blind)
submitted by MeltyStrawberryBat
Currently I have a refurbished Google pixel 2, and it's ass lol. I got it in December and it's definitely gone to shit in the last few weeks. I always buy cheap phones ($100 or so) but my fiance is determined to make me not do that this time.

Currently I'm able to just use the select-to-speak rather than a full on screen reader. I used to use the magnifier but that's also kind of a pain to use. Not sure how to explain why I just don't like it. I know Android phones aren't the best for accessibility, but I really like them and I'm not ready to let go just yet.

Does anyone know if any of them have better accessibility than what I have now?

My main issue is the largest display/font size isn't really that big... For me it's barely readable, and it's embarrassing when I'm out in public with my phone half an inch away from my nose. AND on top of that a lot of apps get all fucky when you have it set up for that. For example the "contact support" page on DoorDash, the chat button is hidden behind an image. Super annoying.

I'm also autistic and my ears are very sensitive. So using a screen reader all the time makes me overstimulated really quickly. If there's an android phone out there that let's me make the text actually big that'd be awesome. Maybe I just need a larger screen?

Let me know what y'all think!

I don't know what your budget is but I would recommend any Samsung phone from their top of the line series the Galaxy s.

I never buy the newest model because it's way too expensive. You can always find the second to last version in new condition for $400 on Amazon. Last year I bought the Galaxy S8 for that exact amount of money. I haven't checked Amazon but it might not be available anymore. If it isn't then check the Galaxy s9. Amazon does sell them refurbished as well for a bit less. The Galaxy s series has really good accessibility, in my opinion. I have some usable vision still but it keeps getting worse every year. I use to magnifier constantly, and I use an Android app called @voiceAloud to read articles. The phone itself does bring a screen reader in the system settings. If you've still got some usable vision, then I think a Samsung Galaxy s screen is the best you're going to get and the best you're going to see in because it's an AMOLED screen. The colors are very saturated, the blacks are deep so contrast is high, the brightness at the maximum setting is blinding for regular people but perfect for visually impaired people who can perceive light that well. I hope this helps.

Oh, and some of the accessibility features like the magnifier or tweakable. I have mine set to where if I tap the screen three times it activates the magnifier and ll need to active, or if i tap three times and hold, it will leave it active while I have my finger on the screen and you can move it around and once you let go it will deactivate.

Samsung phones have Zoom, maybe that'd help. I suggest going with the Galaxy A series. Should only cost around 300-400 bucks.

I’m not exactly sure as I’m completely blind but yeah, a bigger screen might help or try an apple phone.
