Reading visual aids (self.Blind)
submitted by fluodaliso
Hello, I was looking for an a4 magnifier to help my grandmother with poor eyesight read. She doesn't like listening to audiobooks and can't really use technological things, like a kindle.

Do you have any experience with them? Or know anything that could help? All I can seem to find are cheap useless things on amazon.

You could try looking at some second hand magnification devices on Ebay. I have also seen some options on Amazon. You could search “low vision magnifiers” for different options.

Has your grandmother seen a low vision specialist before? They can show them different aids to help them read. It also depends on how strong a magnifier she may need. A 2X magnifier works much differently than a 6X magnifier. Generally speaking, a stronger magnifier covers less area, so requires more moving around.

No, she has seen an ophtalmologist but there aren't specialists where i live.. she can see pretty well with glasses, it's just reading she has a problem with because she says it strains too much her eyes

If you can source an old 2nd hand liberty scholar or similar if could be worth the cost. Otherwise maybe crafting magnifiers often have a built in light. Lidl and aldi do them during their "sewing" week

Is she's open to it, Contact your local low vision clinic or associations for the blind, they could help find the right magnifier for her and or help source and affordable one, first hand they are about 2000e!

I've noticed if you specifically search for vision aids the price is usually quite high, if you search for digital magnifier there are similar products for cheaper.

If you're getting her a handheld one I'd suggest a slanted book holder so she's not hunched over the book
